How much does Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals cost?
AI-901 costs $99, and Microsoft publishes the study path for it free. The cost nobody prices is the one that changed in April 2026: 57 percent of this exam is now implementing AI solutions in Microsoft Foundry, and the audience profile asks for Python coding syntax and familiarity with Azure resources. Budget $99 if you work through Microsoft Learn on an Azure free account, and up to $350 if you buy preparation and keep a retake in reserve.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $99 | The published US list price for one attempt at AI-901. |
| Retake | $99 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Microsoft Learn study path | $0 | Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it. |
| Azure free account for hands-on practice | $0 | Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about. |
| Azure free account | $0 | Free tier services plus a starting credit. This is where the implementation half of the exam is actually learned: deploy a model, call it from a client, delete it. |
| Azure usage past the free credit | $0 to $30 | Model deployments and Content Understanding runs bill by usage. Deleting the resource group at the end of each study session keeps this at zero for most candidates. |
| Python refresher | $0 to $40 | Only needed if you cannot currently read a script. Free courses cover what the exam expects: variables, functions, dictionaries, creating a client, reading a JSON response. |
| Paid video course | $0 to $60 | Optional. Check the recording date before buying. A course produced for AI-900 covers a different exam and will leave you short on the larger domain. |

Ways to bring the cost down
The largest saving available here is not a discount code, it is not sitting the exam twice. A second attempt takes the exam line from $99 to $198, which is more than everything else on this page put together. Since April 2026 the people paying it twice are mostly the ones who prepared for AI-900.
The free material is the material. Microsoft Learn carries the whole study path, written against the same skills outline the exam is built from, and the Azure free account gives you somewhere to deploy a model and call it. Anything charging several hundred dollars for a $99 fundamentals exam is repackaging both, and if it was recorded before April 2026 it is repackaging the wrong exam.
Verified students at accredited institutions get a reduced Microsoft exam rate. On a $99 exam that is a small absolute saving, but it takes about ten minutes to claim and it applies to the role-based exams afterwards too.
Keep the Azure side at zero by treating every study session as disposable. Deploy the model, build the thing, read what it returns, then delete the resource group. The free tier and the starting credit cover a beginner's usage on this syllabus comfortably. The bill only appears when a deployment is left running for a month because nobody remembered it.
Microsoft Learn free training
Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.
Student pricing
Microsoft sells fundamentals and role-based exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions.
Free renewal
Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $99, so a second attempt puts the exam line at $198. There is no partial credit for the domain you passed, and no reduced price for having sat it before.
Read the score report before you rebook. It breaks the result down by skills area, and on AI-901 the short bar is usually the same one: implementing AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry, which is 57 percent of the exam. That gap does not close by rereading. It closes in an afternoon in the Foundry portal deploying a model, calling it from a lightweight client, and running a document through Content Understanding.
The other common failure is pacing rather than knowledge. 40 to 60 questions in 45 minutes is about a minute each at the top of that range, and the drag-and-drop and hot area items take longer than a multiple choice item does. If you left questions unanswered, the fix is a timed sitting rather than more material, and it costs nothing.
One thing worth checking before you pay twice: confirm the material you studied from was written for AI-901. A failed attempt after studying AI-900 content is a sourcing problem, and buying a second voucher without fixing it buys the same result.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
Fundamentals certifications do not expire, so there is no renewal cost at all. You pay $99 once. There is no continuing education requirement, no annual fee, and nothing to diarise.
The certifications above this one work differently. AI-102 is the named next step from AI-901, and Microsoft renews role-based certifications through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the recurring cost there is an hour of your time rather than another exam fee.
The cost that does recur on AI-901 is quieter than a fee. This exam replaced AI-900 on 15 April 2026 because the platform moved underneath it, and the platform will keep moving. The certificate stays valid indefinitely; a Foundry portal you last opened during exam prep is stale within a year or two. Budget the occasional afternoon of rebuilding rather than a renewal payment.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Azure AI Fundamentals can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $150, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
