The VA pays back the cost of a licensing or certification test, and it is the most generous route on this page in the way that matters most: it pays for attempts that did not go well, which no employer scheme does.

• Up to $2,000 per test, covering the fee itself plus registration and administrative charges.
• You can take the same test as many times as you need and the VA will pay each time, including a retake of a test you already passed if recertification requires it.
• Entitlement is charged rather than the benefit being free: for tests taken after 1 August 2018 the charge is prorated against the actual fee rather than costing a full month.
• It is a reimbursement, so the money comes back after the fact. That matters for planning a $425 exam you have to pay for first.

Employer reimbursement

Anyone working in IT, which is more people than ask.

The most commonly available route and the one candidates most often skip, usually because they assume a refusal rather than receiving one. An exam that maps to the role you already hold is the easiest version of this conversation.

• Ask before booking rather than after. Most schemes reimburse a pre-approved exam and refuse a receipt that arrives unannounced, and the approval is usually a form rather than a negotiation.
• A+ and Network+ are funded by IT departments more often than any other certifications in this catalog, because they map to roles those departments are already hiring for.
• Partner requirements are leverage worth naming: a Microsoft, AWS or Cisco partner has a certified-staff count to maintain, and your exam contributes to it.
• Ask what happens if you fail. Most employer schemes fund one attempt, which changes when you should sit rather than whether.

Several vendors sell the same exam at a reduced rate through academic channels, and the discount is real rather than a bundle with training attached.

• CompTIA runs an academic store selling vouchers at reduced rates to students and staff at participating institutions.
• Google offers a half-price attempt through faculty-facilitated programmes covering Associate Cloud Engineer and Cloud Digital Leader.
• Microsoft sells exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions.
• Check enrolment status before assuming you do not qualify: continuing-education and part-time enrolment counts at many institutions.

Workforce and community programmes

Career changers, and anyone near a community college.

Local workforce boards and community colleges buy vouchers outright for entry-level certifications, and the certifications they buy are the ones this catalog starts with.

• A+ is the certification these programmes fund most often, because it maps to the help-desk roles they place people into.
• The funding usually arrives as a voucher rather than a reimbursement, which removes the pay-first problem the GI Bill route has.
• Programmes are local and their eligibility rules vary, so the only reliable way to find out is to ask the specific board or college rather than to read about the scheme.
