Objective 1.3CLF-C02

1.3 Understand the benefits of and strategies for migration to the AWS Cloud.

Objective 1.3 sits in Cloud Concepts, which carries 24% of the Cloud Practitioner exam. The questions below are original, written from the official objective title above, and each explanation cites the AWS page it rests on.

A worked example

Shown solved, with the whole explanation open: this is what every question here carries.

Cloud ConceptsEasy

A company moves 200 virtual machines to EC2 with no changes to the applications, to clear a data centre by year end. Which strategy is that?

Correct.

The concept

Migration strategies differ by how much of the application you touch on the way over. The less you change, the faster and safer the move, and the fewer cloud gains you collect on day one.

Why this answer

Nothing about the servers changes except where they run, so a large fleet can cross in one programme without a compatibility review for every workload.

  • AReplatforming introduces some optimisation on the way, such as putting a database onto Amazon RDS. Nothing about these applications is being altered.
  • Correct. Moving applications from the source environment to AWS without changing them is the lift and shift strategy.
  • CRefactoring redesigns the application around cloud native services. AWS advises against doing that during a large migration because of the complexity.
  • DRepurchasing swaps the product for a different one, usually a SaaS subscription. This company keeps the software it already runs.
