Cost breakdown
AZ-140How much does Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty cost?
The AZ-140 exam is $165 and the material is free, but this is the Azure specialty with the most expensive lab in the catalog. Azure Virtual Desktop needs session hosts, a storage account for FSLogix profiles and an identity service to join them to, and all three bill while they exist. Budget $165 plus real lab spend, and up to $465 if you add a paid course and let the lab run longer than planned.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $165 | The published US list price for one attempt at AZ-140. |
| Retake | $165 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Microsoft Learn study path | $0 | Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it. |
| Azure free account for hands-on practice | $0 | Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about. |
| Microsoft Learn path and practice assessment | $0 | The official preparation, and the practice assessment is free on the exam page. AVD's documentation is unusually good, which reduces the case for buying a course. |
| Session hosts | Hourly, per host | The largest lab cost. Multi-session Windows hosts bill like any other virtual machine while allocated, and a pooled host pool with two hosts is the smallest environment that shows you what the exam asks about load balancing and drain mode. |
| FSLogix profile storage | Small, and easy to forget | Profile containers need a file share. Azure Files at a small quota costs little, and it is the resource most often left behind after the host pool is deleted. |
| Identity | $0 to hourly | Session hosts have to join something. Microsoft Entra join is free; a managed domain service bills by the hour and is worth standing up only for the session where you need it. |
| Windows licensing for AVD | Usually covered | AVD entitlement generally comes through an eligible Microsoft 365 or Windows license rather than as a separate purchase, so check what your organization already holds before assuming a cost. In a personal subscription this is the item to read carefully before building. |

Ways to bring the cost down
Build once, deliberately, then delete everything. A host pool, two session hosts, a workspace, an application group and an FSLogix share can be stood up in an afternoon and removed the same day. The expensive pattern is a half-built environment left running for a fortnight while you read.
Deallocate rather than shut down inside the guest. A session host shut down from Windows still bills; stopping it from the portal or CLI does not. This single habit is the difference between a $20 lab and a $200 one.
Practice the 45 percent domain first. Planning and implementing the AVD infrastructure is nearly half the exam, and it is the part that needs the environment. User environments and apps, at 24 percent, is largely FSLogix and MSIX behavior you can study once the hosts exist.
If you administer AVD at work, do not build a lab at all. Read the skills outline, mark what your production estate does not use, and lab only that. Most candidates in this position need host pool load balancing settings and monitoring, not a rebuild.
Microsoft Learn free training
Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.
Student pricing
Microsoft sells fundamentals and role-based exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions, everywhere except India and China.
Free renewal
Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $165, at full price, with no carry-over.
The standard Microsoft ladder applies: 24 hours, then 14 days before the third and each subsequent attempt, five attempts in twelve months.
AZ-140 failures cluster in one place. Planning and implementing the infrastructure is 45 percent of the exam, and candidates who have only used an environment somebody else built cannot answer host pool sizing, load balancing algorithm or session limit questions from experience.
Between attempts, build the environment rather than rereading it. Two session hosts in a pooled host pool with a real FSLogix share teaches more in one afternoon than a week of documentation, and it costs a few dollars if you delete the resource group afterwards.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
AZ-140 is valid for one year, renewed free through the unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn that opens six months before expiry.
AVD changes fast enough that the renewal assessment is genuinely useful. The identity story in particular has moved, and the renewal tracks the current skills outline rather than the version you sat.
A lapsed certification cannot be renewed. Recovery is $165 and the full proctored exam, which on a specialty exam with an expensive lab is a worse outcome than on most.
Ongoing cost after the exam is $0 and about an hour a year.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Azure Virtual Desktop can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $300, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
