Cost breakdown

AZ-800

How much does Windows Server Hybrid Administrator (Core Infrastructure) cost?

AZ-800 is $165, and it is half a certification. Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate lists AZ-800 and AZ-801 as required exams, so the fee to finish is $330 rather than $165, and the pair is the number to plan around. The study guide, the practice assessment and the Windows Server documentation are free, so what actually moves the total is lab time and whether you need a second attempt. Budget $165 for this exam if you already run Windows Server beside Azure, and up to $630 if you add paid training, some Azure spend and a retake reserve. One date sits over all of it: Microsoft retires AZ-800 on 30 September 2026 at 5:00 PM Central Standard Time.

Cost breakdown

ItemCostDetail
Exam voucher$165The published US list price for one attempt at AZ-800.
Retake$165A second attempt costs the same as the first.
Microsoft Learn study path$0Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it.
Azure free account for hands-on practice$0Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about.
AZ-800 study guide$0Every sub-objective the exam can ask about, plus a change log naming what moved. Nothing you buy replaces it, and material written before the 21 January 2026 update does not match it.
Microsoft practice assessment$0Microsoft links a free practice assessment from the AZ-800 exam page. It is the closest free thing to the real item styles.
Windows Server evaluation media$0Microsoft ships evaluation versions of Windows Server that install without a purchased license and can later be converted to a retail edition. Two of them in a hypervisor build a forest, a trust and a file server.
Lab hostHardware you own, or an hourly billThe AD DS objectives want two or three servers running at once, so memory on the lab host is the constraint rather than processor speed. If your workstation cannot carry that, the same domain controllers run as Azure virtual machines and become an hourly cost instead of a one-time one.
Azure free account$0 to startA new Azure account carries $200 of credit to spend within 30 days, free monthly amounts of more than 20 popular services for twelve months, and more than 65 always free services. Enough for the Azure Arc, Microsoft Entra Connect and Azure Files objectives if you delete what you build.
Azure spend past the free amountsVaries with what you leave runningThe line people forget. A site to site gateway or a premium file share bills by the hour whether you are using it or not. Set a budget alert on day one and delete the resource group at the end of each session.
Paid course or book$0 to $300Optional. Microsoft's own four day instructor led course, Administer Windows Server Hybrid Core Infrastructure, is sold by training partners at prices Microsoft does not publish, so treat any course figure you see as a quote rather than a price.
AZ-801, the other half$165Passing AZ-800 alone earns a transcript entry, not the certification. Microsoft says to complete an exam before its retirement date to ensure it is applied toward your certification.

Ways to bring the cost down

The largest saving on this exam is not a discount code. It is finishing both halves before 30 September 2026. Microsoft's note on both exam pages says to complete the exam before the retirement date to ensure it is applied toward your certification, and that after that date you should refer to the certification for its exam requirements. Microsoft does not say what a lone AZ-800 pass is worth afterward, so do not spend $165 on the assumption that it will carry.

The official material is free and it is the material the questions come from: the study guide, the self paced collection on Microsoft Learn, the free practice assessment and the Windows Server documentation. A paid course covers the same skills measured list with a different presenter, which is why the low end of the range on this page is the exam fee alone.

Lab on hardware you own wherever the objective allows it. Four of the five skill areas run happily in local virtual machines on evaluation media that costs nothing. Push the hybrid pieces, Azure Arc, Microsoft Entra Connect, Azure Files and hybrid networking, into one concentrated block on the free account rather than leaving a subscription idling for a month.

Do not lose the fee to the calendar. Microsoft forfeits the exam fee if you cancel or move an appointment less than 24 hours before it starts, and forfeits a company purchased voucher the same way. That is the cheapest $165 anyone loses on this exam.

For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $165 at full price. There is no reduced retake fee, no partial credit for the skill areas you passed and nothing carried over from the first sitting.

Microsoft's rule is 24 hours before a second attempt, then 14 days between all subsequent attempts, with a maximum of five attempts on the same exam within twelve months of the first one. A waiver of the waiting period is granted only where an internet or equipment failure produced a Pearson VUE case number, and for no other reason.

The 14 day rule is what bites on a retiring exam. A first attempt late in September 2026 leaves room for the 24 hour retake and nothing after it. If you are booking now, book early enough that a second attempt still fits inside the window rather than assuming you will pass first time.

Read the score report before you rebook. Microsoft reports by skill area and does not say which questions you missed, so the bars are the whole diagnosis. A low bar in Active Directory Domain Services, at 30 to 35 percent the largest area, is a forest to rebuild in a lab. A low bar in storage and file services is an evening on SMB, Storage Replica and Azure File Sync. They are not the same problem and they do not take the same time.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

The certification lasts one year and renews for free. Microsoft opens an unproctored, open book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn during a six month window before the expiration date, and passing extends the certification one year from that date. The cost is the hour it takes.

There is no limit on renewal assessment attempts. If you do not pass you can try again immediately, and after the second try you wait 24 hours between attempts. The only hard rule is that you pass before the certification expires.

Renewal is where the retirement matters a second time. Microsoft's certification page says that once AZ-800 and AZ-801 retire they will be removed and AZ-802 will remain as the available path to earn this certification. Microsoft has not published what recovering a lapsed certification costs once AZ-800 no longer exists, so treat the expiry date as hard and renew inside the window rather than finding out.

After the two exams, the running cost is $0 a year plus about an hour. There is no annual maintenance fee of the kind ISC2 charges and no continuing education units to log the way CompTIA requires.

Typical preparation budget

Preparation for Windows Server Hybrid Core can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $300, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.

Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.

The cheapest way to avoid the $165 line on this page is to be ready before you book. Free Windows Server Hybrid Core practice questions with a full explanation on every answer.
