How much does Windows Server Hybrid Administrator (Advanced Services) cost?

Sit AZ-800 first. AZ-801 assumes that material rather than teaching it, and a candidate who reverses the order pays for the lesson at $165 a sitting. The exams are cheaper in the order Microsoft numbers them.

Then plan around the retirement date. Microsoft's note on both exam pages says to complete the exam before the retirement date to ensure it is applied toward your certification, and points to the certification for requirements afterward. Two exams inside the window is the whole budget question on this pair in September 2026.

The official preparation is free. The study guide, the Microsoft Learn collection, the free practice assessment and the Windows Server and Azure documentation cover every skill area. Paid courses reorganize the same list, which is why the exam fee alone is a realistic total for a working administrator.

Keep the Azure half short and deliberate. Site Recovery, Backup and Migrate are the services that keep charging after you stop looking at them, so do that block in one concentrated week on the free account credit, then delete the recovery services vault rather than leaving it for later.

Do not forfeit the fee. Cancelling or moving an appointment less than 24 hours out forfeits the exam fee, and a company purchased voucher the same way.

A retake is another $165 at full price, with no partial credit for the skill areas you passed and nothing carried over.

The waiting rules are Microsoft's standard ones: 24 hours before a second attempt, 14 days between every attempt after that, and no more than five attempts on the same exam within twelve months of the first. The waiting period is waived only for an internet or equipment failure with a Pearson VUE case number behind it.

With the exam retiring on 30 September 2026, the second attempt is the one to protect. Book the first sitting far enough ahead that the 24 hour retake and, if it comes to it, a 14 day third attempt still land inside the window.

The score report is by skill area and Microsoft does not disclose which questions were missed, so the bars are the diagnosis. A weak bar in migrating servers and workloads, at 20 to 25 percent of the exam, usually means Storage Migration Service and Azure Migrate were read about rather than run. That is a weekend in a lab, not another course. A weak bar in securing Windows Server, the largest area at 25 to 30 percent, is broader and closer to a rewrite of the whole study block.

The certification lasts one year and renews free through an unproctored, open book assessment on Microsoft Learn. The window opens six months before the expiration date, and a pass extends the certification one year from that date.

Renewal assessment attempts are unlimited. A failed attempt can be retried immediately, and after the second try there is a 24 hour wait between attempts. Nothing about renewal costs money.

The certification, not the exam, is what renews, and Microsoft's certification page says that once AZ-800 and AZ-801 retire they will be removed and AZ-802 will remain as the available path to earn it. Microsoft has not published a recovery route or a price for a lapsed certification after that point, so the six month window is worth a calendar reminder set on the day you pass.

Running cost after the second exam is $0 a year and about an hour. No maintenance fee, no continuing education units, no reporting.
