Objective 4.6

200-301

Configure and verify DHCP client and relay.

Objective 4.6 sits in IP Services, which carries 10% of the CCNA exam. The questions below are original, written from the official objective title above, and each explanation cites the Cisco page it rests on.

A worked example

Shown solved, with the whole explanation open: this is what every question here carries.

4-6IP Services

Hosts in VLAN 30 get no address, while other VLANs served by the same server at 172.16.1.2 lease normally.

Switch# show running-config interface vlan 30interface Vlan30 ip address 10.30.0.1 255.255.255.0end

Which command fixes this?

service dhcp in global configuration modeThe DHCP server and relay agent processes that service dhcp controls are enabled by default, so re-entering it changes nothing about this failure.
ip dhcp pool VLAN30 in global configuration modeA local pool would make the switch itself the server for VLAN 30. That is a different design, and it leaves the central server's records incomplete.
ip default-gateway 172.16.1.2 in global modeA default gateway matters on a device that does not route. This switch already routes 10.30.0.0/24, so it has no gateway to learn.
ip helper-address 172.16.1.2 on interface Vlan30Correct · your answerCorrect. Only a forwarding address makes the relay carry the request across.

Correct.

Concept

A host with no address can only broadcast, and a broadcast dies at the routed boundary. Crossing that boundary takes a Layer 3 device told where to send the request as a unicast, which is the job the relay agent function performs.

Why D

The SVI already has an address, so the subnet is routed and the failure is not reachability. What is missing is a forwarding address on the interface facing the clients, which turns the broadcast into a unicast toward 172.16.1.2 and stamps the relay's own address into the packet so the server can pick the right pool.

Source

If you want the switch to relay DHCP packets, the IP address of the DHCP server must be configured on the switch virtual interface (SVI) of the DHCP client.

Sample question 1 of 2

4-6IP Services

A relay forwards requests from one client VLAN to a server holding pools for several subnets.

clients 10.30.0.0/24 -- SW1 (Vlan30 10.30.0.1, relay) -- R1 -- server 172.16.1.2

Which field tells the server which pool to draw from?

Sample question 2 of 2

4-6IP Services

A campus has one DHCP server and many subnets. What removes the need for a server on every segment?
