Objective 6.5

200-301

Describe characteristics of REST-based APIs (authentication types, CRUD, HTTP verbs, and data encoding).

Objective 6.5 sits in Automation and Programmability, which carries 10% of the CCNA exam. The questions below are original, written from the official objective title above, and each explanation cites the Cisco page it rests on.

A worked example

Shown solved, with the whole explanation open: this is what every question here carries.

6-5Automation and Programmability

A management application sends this request to a RESTCONF-enabled IOS XE device.

PATCH /restconf/data/Cisco-IOS-XE-native:native/interface/GigabitEthernet=2 HTTP/1.1Host: 10.1.1.1Content-Type: application/yang-data+json

Which CRUD operation does the method perform?

Create a new resourceCreate is PUT or POST here. PUT creates or replaces the whole resource and POST also covers operations such as a reload.
Read the resourceA GET would read the resource and leave the datastore untouched. Nothing about this request retrieves data.
Delete the target resourceDELETE removes the targeted resource. This request names a resource to modify, and carries a body to modify it with.
Update an existing resourceCorrect · your answerCorrect. PATCH is the update method in this mapping.

Correct.

Concept

REST maps datastore operations onto HTTP methods, so the method line decides whether a call reads, adds, modifies or removes data. The URI names the resource and the verb names the action taken on it.

Why D

On IOS XE the RESTCONF method table maps GET to Read, PATCH to Update, PUT to Create or Replace, POST to Create or an operation such as reload, and DELETE to removal of the targeted resource. A PATCH therefore merges the supplied data into a resource that already exists.

A script reads a hostname from an IOS XE device with this request.

GET /restconf/data/Cisco-IOS-XE-native:native/hostname HTTP/1.1Host: 10.1.1.1Accept: application/yang-data+json

Which Accept value returns the same data XML-encoded?

Sample question 2 of 3

6-5Automation and ProgrammabilityChoose 2

An engineer writes a retry into a script that calls a REST API and times out mid change. Which two methods may be repeated safely? (Choose two.)

Sample question 3 of 3

6-5Automation and Programmability
