The short answer
ISC2 CSSLP is an advanced exam. It is written for experienced practitioners, and the questions assume judgment built from real work rather than memorized definitions.
With several years in the field, the difficulty is breadth: domains you have read about but never worked in. Without that experience, read the objectives list domain by domain before booking. It is the honest measure of how much of this is new to you.
What actually makes it hard
Recognition is not understanding.
The format is multiple choice and advanced item types, delivered at a Pearson VUE Testing Center. The wrong options are written to look right to someone who learned the terms without the concept behind them.
Breadth across domains.
The blueprint spans 8 domains and the exam samples all of them. The heaviest, Secure Software Architecture and Design, is 15 percent of the exam; the lightest, Secure Software Supply Chain, 10 percent.
The clock.
125 questions in 180 minutes is about 1.4 minutes each, including the time to read the stem and the options. Reading about the exam does not rehearse that pace; a full-length sitting against the clock does.

Difficulty is not spread evenly. ISC2 publishes the domain weightings, and they tell you where your study time buys the most points:

Where candidates struggle: The eight weights are unusually flat, from 10 to 15 percent, so a single neglected domain costs about as much as any other and broad coverage beats depth in one favorite area. The outline follows the software lifecycle in order and carries an effective date of September 15, 2023, so check that date against anything you study from; Secure Software Supply Chain is the smallest domain at 10 percent and the one older material is most likely to be thin on.
