How much does Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate (CBROPS) cost?

This is the exam in the catalog where free material comes closest to being sufficient. Cisco publishes the topics, the analysis skills are practised on free public datasets, and the analyst tooling is open source. A self-study pass is $300 and nothing else.

Cisco exams are covered under the DoD COOL programs and are eligible for GI Bill reimbursement, which pays the fee back after the fact rather than discounting it up front. Check eligibility before booking, because the reimbursement route usually has paperwork that has to start first.

Do not buy a lab subscription for this one. Unlike CCNA, CyberOps is not a configuration exam. You are reading alerts, sessions and host artifacts rather than building topologies, and a virtual machine on your own laptop covers it.

The one thing worth spending on is time rather than money. This exam rewards having looked at a lot of telemetry, and that is hours rather than purchases. Working through captures until protocol behaviour is familiar is free and is the only preparation that reliably moves the monitoring and intrusion analysis domains.

A retake is another $300 at full price, and Cisco requires a five day wait after a failed attempt before you can sit the same exam again.

Judging what went wrong is harder here than on most exams, because Cisco does not publish the passing score for CBROPS and reports a scaled result. You get a domain breakdown, but not a clear sense of how far short you were, so treat a near miss and a clear failure as the same instruction: fix the weakest domain properly.

Failures cluster in security monitoring and network intrusion analysis, which together are 45 percent of the exam. Both are evidence-reading skills rather than recall, and both improve with volume. If either scored low, the answer is more captures rather than more notes.

If host-based analysis scored low, the gap is usually Windows and Linux artifacts: which log holds what, where persistence lives, and what a process tree tells you. That is concrete, finite and much faster to close than the telemetry domains.

CyberOps Associate lasts three years. Renewal is either 30 continuing education credits or passing a higher Cisco exam.

The continuing education route is Cisco's own catalog of courses and activities, and it is the cheaper path for somebody staying in the field. Credits accrue from training you would likely do anyway.

Passing any higher Cisco certification renews this one, so an analyst moving toward a professional-level security certification renews CyberOps as a side effect rather than as a separate cost.

If you are moving out of security operations, letting it lapse is reasonable. An expired certification still evidences that you held the knowledge on a date, and renewal is only worth paying for while the role still asks for it.

Preparation for CyberOps Associate can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $400, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
