How much does Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator cost?

The largest saving on this exam is access, not a discount. If you administer Entra ID at work, ask for a non-production tenant rather than practising in production. Conditional Access policies lock people out for real, and a policy you test on live accounts is an incident, not a lab. Most organisations will hand over a test tenant for the asking, and it costs them nothing.

If you do not have a work tenant, create your own and sequence the P2 trial deliberately. Do your user, group, hybrid identity and app registration practice on the free tier first, and only start the 30 day P2 trial when you are ready to do PIM, Identity Protection, access reviews and entitlement management in one concentrated block. Starting the trial on day one wastes most of it.

Employers pay for this one more often than for fundamentals exams, because SC-300 maps onto work an identity administrator is already being asked to do. Ask before you buy. Microsoft also sells exams at a reduced student rate to verified students, and runs free Virtual Training Days on identity that have carried exam vouchers.

Skip the exam simulators that promise real questions. They are the braindump model, they get people banned from Microsoft certification, and their answers are frequently wrong on the governance topics because those changed most recently.

A retake is another $165. Microsoft's rules are the same as on every other exam in the programme: 24 hours before your second attempt, 14 days before the third and each attempt after that, and five attempts maximum on the same exam in twelve months.

SC-300 fails differently from a fundamentals exam. It has case studies, and 100 minutes disappears quickly if you read a case study three times before answering. If you ran out of time rather than out of knowledge, the fix is pacing practice, not more study, and 24 hours is genuinely enough to change that.

If the score report shows the identity governance area low, that is roughly 28 percent of the exam and it is not fixable by reading. Spend the 14 days in a tenant: build an access package with a catalog and an approval workflow, run an access review to completion, and activate a PIM role with justification and approval. The questions describe those flows step by step and you can feel the difference between having done it and having read about it.

A low workload identities score usually means app registrations. Register an application, configure a client secret and a certificate, grant delegated and application permissions, and consent to them. That is one evening and it covers a whole skill area.

SC-300 is valid for one year, and renewal is free. Microsoft renews role-based certifications through an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn rather than a paid exam, so the ongoing cost is about an hour of your time each year.

The renewal window opens six months before your expiry date. The assessment is open book, you can consult the documentation while you take it, and you can take it again if you do not pass the first time. Put a calendar reminder at the six month mark on the day you pass, because the window is the whole risk here.

Let it lapse and there is no grace period worth relying on: the way back is the full exam again at $165. That is the only realistic renewal cost on this certification, and it is entirely avoidable.

Set against the alternatives, the total cost of ownership is low. CompTIA runs three year cycles with continuing education units and a maintenance fee, and ISC2 charges an annual fee per credential. After the $165, SC-300 charges nothing, forever, as long as you keep answering the yearly assessment.

Preparation for Identity and Access Admin can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $300, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
