| Retake | $130 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Free eLearning on the exam topics | $0 | The free training page lists The Cybersecurity Landscape, Understanding Threats and Attacks, Security Operations and the Defense Analyst, Data and Tools for Defense Analysts, The Art of Investigation, SOC Essentials: Investigating with Splunk, SOC Essentials: Introduction to Threat Hunting and Introduction to Enterprise Security, which follow the six blueprint areas closely. |

Ways to bring the cost down
Work through the free SOC courses in order. Splunk's free training page carries a sequence from the cybersecurity landscape through threats, data sources, investigation and threat hunting, which is the shape of this blueprint.
Practice the SPL on a free Splunk Enterprise license with your own security logs. SPL and Efficient Searching is 20 percent and is the area where a home instance replaces a paid lab entirely.
Buy the five registration pack at $500 if the Defense Engineer is your next step, since the vouchers stay valid for about a year.
Ask whether your employer holds Splunk Education training units, which convert to vouchers at 13 units each.
Keep the appointment or move it more than 48 hours out.
Pearson VUE five exam voucher pack
Splunk points at a Pearson VUE voucher store selling five exams for $500, which is $100 an exam rather than $130.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is $130 after a seven day wait, then 14 days after a second failure, 28 before a fourth attempt and 56 before the fifth and sixth.
Pass or fail is shown on submission and a failing candidate gets section feedback in the Pearson VUE account against the six blueprint areas, four of which are 20 percent each.
The exam is closed book and the handbook treats any reference material as an automatic failure with the fee forfeited.
Sixty six questions in 75 minutes, less the three minute agreement timer, leaves just over a minute a question with time for a review pass.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
Three years from the exam date. The handbook lists no next level option for the Cybersecurity Defense Analyst, so renewal is a $130 retake of this exam in the final year of the window.
The Defense Engineer is the natural next exam but it does not renew the Analyst. The handbook's tables show no next level or downstream link between the three Cybersecurity Defense certifications.
A pass earlier than the final year does not count towards renewal. There is a 90 day grace period and no extensions.
Reminders come at 180, 90 and 30 days from Splunk and 60 from Credly, and a lapse past the grace period sets the certification inactive.
Cycle length: 3 years. All Splunk certifications run a three year life cycle from the date of the highest certification exam passed. Splunk stopped renewing certifications through coursework on 1 March 2026, so renewal now means either retaking the same exam in the final year of the window or earning a higher level certification in the same track. Splunk says a certification you let lapse is marked inactive, and that you then restart the program at the Splunk Core Certified Power User level.
