The Splunk O11y Cloud Certified Metrics User is 54 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, at Pearson VUE for $130 an attempt, with no prerequisite. Splunk rates it foundational and describes it as a baseline for users of Splunk Observability Cloud.
The blueprint is eight areas: Metrics Concepts, Introduction to Visualizing Metrics, Finding Insights Using Analytics and Detectors for Common Use Cases at 15 percent each, and Get Metrics In with OpenTelemetry, Monitor Using Built-in Content, Introduction to Alerting on Metrics with Detectors and Create Efficient Dashboards and Alerts at 10 percent each.
It is a different product from Splunk Enterprise. The search language, indexes and knowledge objects of the Core track do not appear here, and the handbook lists no next level option for it, so it stands on its own.
Who O11y Cloud Certified Metrics User is for
A good fit if
- You are a DevOps or SRE engineer whose organization runs Splunk Observability Cloud and you want detectors, charts and analytics functions to be things you design rather than inherit.
- You send metrics in through the OpenTelemetry Collector and want to understand what Observability Cloud does with them: rollups, resolution, and how metric type changes what a chart shows.
- You are on a platform team building the dashboards and alerts everyone else uses, and Create Efficient Dashboards and Alerts is on your job description as well as the blueprint.
Probably not, if
- Your work is in Splunk Enterprise or Splunk Cloud Platform. This exam does not test SPL, indexes or knowledge objects, and the Core Certified User or Power User is the right first exam.
- You do not have access to Observability Cloud. The trial is 14 days, and the detector, chart and analytics questions are hard to answer without hands on time.
- You want a certification with a next level upgrade path. The handbook lists none for this one, so renewal is by retaking the same exam in the final year of the window.
Is O11y Cloud Certified Metrics User worth it?
At $130 with free courses and a free trial, it is cheap for what it covers, and Splunk publishes the domain weightings so you know where the marks are.
Its value tracks how much of your work is in Observability Cloud. Where it is your daily tool, the detector and analytics material is directly useful; where it is one tool among several, the product specific focus limits what the credential says about you.
Plan for the renewal on day one. With no next level option, a $130 retake in the final year is the only way to keep it, and three years is long enough for the product to change.

Common mistakes
- Starting the trial on day one
- The Observability Cloud trial runs 14 days, not the 60 the Enterprise trial gives. Begin it when you are ready for the detector and dashboard work, otherwise it expires while you are still on concepts.
- Assuming Splunk Enterprise knowledge carries over
- Nothing on this blueprint is SPL. Metric types, rollups, resolution and analytics functions are their own model, and people who know the Core platform well sometimes study least where they need it most.
- Studying detectors from the interface alone
- Introduction to Alerting on Metrics with Detectors and Detectors for Common Use Cases are 25 percent together. Build each common use case and change the signal, condition and alert settings to see what moves.
- Skipping the built in content
- Monitor Using Built-in Content is 10 percent and is the area most people never open because they build their own. Know what the navigators and built in dashboards give you.
- Opening the documentation
- The exam is closed book and the handbook says a perceived violation is an automatic failure with the fee forfeited. The analytics function names need to be memorized.
What comes after passing
Claim the Credly badge on a personal email address. The handbook recommends one that does not belong to your employer.
Put the renewal in your calendar now. The handbook lists no next level option for this certification, so the only renewal is a $130 retake in the final year of the three year window, followed by a 90 day grace period and then inactive status.
If you also work in the Core platform, the Core Certified Power User is a separate track with its own renewal, so hold both deliberately rather than by accident.
