The Data Engineer Associate exam is $150. The exam guide is free, the documentation the questions come from is free, and most of this curriculum can be practiced inside the AWS free tier if you delete what you build. Ways to bring the cost down
Delete the cluster, not the tables. Redshift is the only resource on this curriculum that bills significantly while idle, and it is the one people leave up between sessions.
Keep data volumes small. Partitioning, file formats, schema evolution and job bookmarks are all visible on a few megabytes, and the exam asks about the mechanism rather than about scale.
Use the free official material properly. AWS publishes the exam guide, sample questions and a free question set through Skill Builder, and those cover the format questions that a paid course sells as its main value.
Check the benefit voucher before booking anything. AWS places a discount in the certification account after a pass, and it applies to the next exam if you go looking for it.
50 percent retake or next-exam voucher
Passing an AWS exam earns a benefit in AWS Certification that includes a 50 percent discount voucher toward your next exam. Failing an exam does not earn one.
AWS Skill Builder free tier
The official exam prep course, the question sets, and the digital training are free on Skill Builder. The paid subscription adds labs and the official practice exam.
Free practice question set
AWS publishes an official set of sample questions for each exam at no cost, and it is the closest thing to the real wording you will find.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $150 at full price, with nothing carried forward.
AWS requires 14 calendar days after a failed attempt and sets no limit on the number of attempts. Once you pass, the exam is closed to you for two years unless AWS publishes a new version under a different code.
Results are scaled from 100 to 1,000 with 720 to pass, on a compensatory model, so a weak domain can be carried by strength elsewhere. The score report may classify performance by section, and AWS advises reading it with caution because the domains are different sizes.
The failure that repeats on this exam is service selection under a stated constraint. Glue, EMR, Lambda and Redshift can all transform data, and the question is which one fits the latency, cost and operational picture described. Between attempts, take three pipelines you understand and write down which service each belongs on and why the other three are wrong.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
AWS certifications are valid for three years. Recertification means passing the current version of this exam, or any higher-level AWS exam, before it expires.
That second route is the useful one. A candidate who goes on to a professional or specialty certification inside three years renews this one automatically, so the renewal question answers itself for anybody continuing up the track.
AWS issues a benefit voucher after a pass, and using it on the recertification attempt is the cheapest way to hold this certification across six years.
There is no continuing education scheme and no maintenance fee, which is the difference between AWS and both CompTIA and ISC2: nothing to log, nothing to pay annually, and no partial credit for training.
