The exam guide, the official practice question set, the official pretest and the Skill Builder exam prep plan are all published at no charge, and between them they define the scope precisely enough that a paid course is a convenience rather than a requirement.

Check your AWS Certification Account for the 50 percent discount voucher before you book. AWS's recertification page names that voucher as the way to pay for the exam you recertify with, and it is issued for passing rather than for failing, so an AI Practitioner or Data Engineer pass already in your history may be sitting on half the fee.

The timing is a cost decision as much as a study decision. If you cannot be ready for the English exam before 28 September 2026, the English route afterward is the MLA-C02 beta, which is cheaper, longer, can only be taken once and returns results in about a week.

Skip the large third party question banks. The exam guide's appendix names the in scope and out of scope services, and reading that list honestly against your own experience finds gaps faster than a thousand recall questions will.

Watch the lab bill rather than trusting a free tier to hold. The services this exam is about are the metered ones, and a training job on a large instance or an endpoint left provisioned is a bigger line item than the fee you are trying to protect.

A retake is another $150. AWS requires a 14 calendar day wait after a failed attempt, sets no limit on the number of attempts, and charges the full registration fee for every one.

The English deadline changes that arithmetic. With 28 September 2026 as the last day to take MLA-C01 in English, a first sitting has to leave room for the 14 day wait and a second booking inside the window, or the retake is a different exam.

Most AWS exams do not show a pass or fail on screen. Results arrive within five business days in your AWS Certification Account, with a section level table of classifications. The scoring is compensatory, so a weak domain does not fail you on its own, and AWS says to interpret the section feedback with caution rather than as a per domain score.

Rescheduling is free up to 24 hours before the appointment, and an exam can be rescheduled twice. Cancel more than 24 hours out and the fee you paid is refunded.

Once you have passed, you cannot retake the same exam for two years, unless it has been updated with a new exam guide and exam series code, which is exactly what MLA-C02 is.

The certification is valid for three years, and AWS states that it stays active for its full validity period regardless of when you earn it. A pass in the final week of MLA-C01 is worth the same three years as a pass a year ago.

AWS lists two renewal options for this certification: pass the latest version of this exam, or pass the AWS Certified Generative AI Developer Professional exam. Either way it is a real sitting rather than an administrative step.

Time is added from the date you complete the recertification, not from the old expiry date, so renewing very early gives away the difference. Three years is also long enough that the exam will have changed by then, which is the same reason MLA-C01 is being replaced now.
