It assumes working familiarity with the field it covers, and candidates coming from adjacent roles usually need to close real gaps rather than review. With a year or two of hands-on exposure to the subject area, preparation is mostly structured review plus practice under time pressure. Coming in cold, plan for meaningfully more study time and lean on the objectives to find what you have never touched.

What actually makes it hard

  • Interactive items, not just multiple choice.

    Multiple choice and multiple response, plus the newer AWS item types: ordering, matching, and case studies with several questions on one scenario. These take longer than multiple-choice questions and punish rote memorization, because you have to do the task rather than recognize an answer.

  • Breadth across domains.

    The blueprint spans 4 domains, and the heaviest, Data Preparation for Machine Learning, is 28% of the exam. You cannot skip a domain and rely on the rest; the weighting reaches everything.

  • The clock.

    65 (50 scored, 15 unscored) questions in 130 minutes leaves little room to dwell. Time pressure is a skill of its own, and it is the one thing reading can never prepare you for. Timed practice can.
