SAA-C03

How much does AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate cost?

Solutions Architect Associate costs $150 to sit. AWS publishes the exam guide, a free official question set and the whole Skill Builder exam-prep course at no charge, and the free tier covers nearly everything the exam asks you to design. Budget $150 if you stay on free material, and up to $600 if you want a paid course and a retake held in reserve.

AWS Skill Builder free tier$0The official exam-prep course and the digital training are free. The paid subscription adds labs and the official practice exam; neither is required.
Official sample questions$0AWS publishes a free sample set for the exam. It is the closest thing to the real wording available anywhere, and it is worth more than a large paid question bank written by a third party.
AWS account on the free tier$0, with a billing alarmEnough to build a VPC, an S3 bucket with lifecycle rules, an autoscaling group and an RDS instance. Set a billing alarm on day one; the classic beginner bill is a NAT gateway left running.
AWS Well-Architected Framework$0Free documentation, and it is effectively the exam's answer key. This exam asks which design is best, and the framework's five pillars are how AWS decides what best means.
Paid video course$0 to $200Optional. Popular for this exam because the service surface is large, but every service it covers is documented free.
Retake reserve$150Only spent if you fail. Passing earns a 50 percent voucher toward your next exam; failing earns nothing, so the reserve is real money.

Ways to bring the cost down

Free goes further on AWS than on any other vendor in this catalog. The exam guide, the exam-prep course, the sample questions and the documentation are all free, and the free tier is generous enough to build most of what the exam describes. A self-study pass is $150 and nothing else.

The benefit worth planning around is the 50 percent voucher. Passing any AWS exam earns a benefit that includes a half-price voucher toward your next one. Failing earns nothing. If you intend to sit Cloud Practitioner and then this, taking them in order means the second one is half price, which is the largest single saving available on the AWS track.

Watch the free tier rather than trusting it. The account is free, the mistakes are not: a NAT gateway, an idle load balancer or a provisioned RDS instance left running overnight will each generate a bill that dwarfs your study budget. Set a billing alarm before you create anything, and delete lab resources the same day you build them.

Skip the paid practice exams that promise hundreds of questions. This exam is scenario judgement rather than recall, so the useful practice is reading a requirement and choosing between four defensible architectures. A small set of well-explained scenarios beats a large set of trivia.

  • 50 percent retake or next-exam voucher

Passing an AWS exam earns a benefit in AWS Certification that includes a 50 percent discount voucher toward your next exam. Failing an exam does not earn one.

    AWS, certification benefits

  • AWS Skill Builder free tier

The official exam prep course, the question sets, and the digital training are free on Skill Builder. The paid subscription adds labs and the official practice exam.

    AWS Skill Builder

  • Free practice question set

AWS publishes an official set of sample questions for each exam at no cost, and it is the closest thing to the real wording you will find.

    AWS, certification preparation

For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $150 at full price, and AWS requires a 14 day wait after a failed attempt before you can sit the same exam again. There is no limit on total attempts, but each one is the full fee and each wait is 14 days.

The 14 day wait is the useful part of the policy. You get a score report broken down by domain and enough time to act on it, which is the opposite of the CompTIA position where you can rebook immediately and often should not.

Failures on this exam cluster in a predictable place. The resilient and high-performing domains are where people lose marks, because both ask you to choose between designs that all work, on criteria you have to infer from the question. If those scored low, the fix is the Well-Architected Framework rather than more services.

If the cost-optimised domain scored low, that is the cheapest gap to close and the most commercially useful. It is a small number of concrete facts about storage classes, instance purchasing options and data transfer charges, and two evenings on the pricing pages is usually enough.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

AWS certifications last three years. Recertifying means passing the current version of the exam, or a higher one in the same track, at full price.

The upward route is the one to use. Passing a professional or specialty certification recertifies the associate level beneath it, so somebody moving from Solutions Architect Associate to a professional exam renews this one by doing what they were going to do anyway.

The 50 percent benefit voucher from your last pass applies to a recertification too, which makes staying current substantially cheaper than the list price suggests. Check the benefit before booking; it is not applied automatically.

Three years is long enough that the exam itself will have changed by the time you renew. Recertifying is a real sitting of a current exam rather than an administrative step, so treat it as study rather than paperwork.

Typical preparation budget

Preparation for Solutions Architect Associate can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $350, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.

Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.

The cheapest way to avoid the $150 line on this page is to be ready before you book. Free Solutions Architect Associate practice questions with a full explanation on every answer.
