Which one to take first

AWS Solutions Architect Associate if you have no reason to prefer otherwise. The market is larger, the certification is requested more often, and the concepts transfer to any cloud afterwards.

Google ACE if the employers near you run Google Cloud, or if you already work in a shop that does. A certification is worth what the local market pays for it, and in the right market ACE is worth more than a generic AWS credential.

Ten minutes on a job board answers this better than any comparison can. Search both platform names in your city and count the postings before spending anything.

When the answer is the other one

  • Take Google ACE instead if your employer runs Google Cloud

    Certifying in a platform you do not touch is study you cannot practise and knowledge you will not retain. If your work is on Google Cloud, ACE is cheaper, directly applicable, and immediately useful in a way an AWS credential would not be for at least a year.

  • Take AZ-104 instead if the market near you is Microsoft

    Azure holds a large share of enterprise infrastructure, especially in organisations already committed to Microsoft licensing. Neither of these certifications helps at such an employer, and AZ-104 is the equivalent rung on that platform.

  • Take Cloud Practitioner or a fundamentals exam first if cloud is new

    Both of these assume you have deployed something and understand regions, identity and networking as they apply to cloud. Starting at associate level without that means learning the platform and sitting the exam simultaneously, which is expensive at either price.

The short version

No local signal either way: AWS Solutions Architect Associate, for the larger market.

Employer or local market on Google Cloud: ACE, and it is cheaper and renews on a shorter cycle.

AWS Solutions Architect Associate appears in more postings globally. Google ACE is worth more at an employer running Google Cloud, and fewer people hold it, which cuts both ways.

Do the skills transfer?

The concepts do: identity, networking, storage tiers, managed services and cost models exist on every platform. The service names, defaults and command syntax do not, so a second cloud is faster to learn but not free.

How often do they renew?

Google Cloud associate certifications renew every two years. AWS associate certifications renew every three, and passing a higher-level AWS exam extends the lower ones.
