Cost breakdown
SCS-C03How much does AWS Certified Security Specialty cost?
Security Specialty costs $300 to sit, double the associate exams, and it is the point where free material stops being quite enough on its own. AWS publishes the exam guide, sample questions and the Skill Builder prep course free, but this exam expects operational judgement rather than service knowledge. Budget $300 if you already work in AWS security, and up to $900 if you need paid training and a retake in reserve.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $300 | The published US list price for one attempt at SCS-C03. |
| Retake | $300 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Official practice exam on Skill Builder | Varies | Included with the Skill Builder subscription. A free official question set is available without it. |
| AWS account for hands-on practice | Varies | Free tier covers most of what these exams ask about. Set a billing alarm on day one. |
| AWS Skill Builder free tier | $0 | The official exam-prep course and digital training, free. The paid subscription adds labs, which matter more on this exam than on the associate ones. |
| Official sample questions | $0 | The free official set. On a specialty exam the wording is half the difficulty, so material written by the people who write the questions is worth more here than anywhere else. |
| AWS account for incident response practice | $0 on the free tier, with a billing alarm | CloudTrail, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Config and KMS all have free tiers or trials large enough to see how they behave. Detection services generate findings you have to actually look at, which is the part reading cannot replace. |
| AWS security documentation and whitepapers | $0 | The security best practices material and the KMS developer guide are free and are where the exam's harder answers come from, particularly key policies against IAM policies. |
| Paid course or labs | $0 to $450 | Optional, and more defensible here than at associate level. A guided lab environment saves you building an incident-response scenario from nothing. |
| Retake reserve | $300 | Only spent if you fail. At $300 a sitting this is the reserve most worth having, and two attempts is $600. |

Ways to bring the cost down
The largest saving on this exam is not buying it too early. Security Specialty assumes you have operated AWS security services, not read about them, and candidates who sit it without that background pay twice. Six months of real exposure is cheaper than a second $300 attempt and a course.
Use the 50 percent benefit voucher. Passing any AWS exam earns a benefit including a half-price voucher toward the next one, so arriving here from Solutions Architect Associate rather than cold halves the fee. Failing earns nothing, which is another argument for sitting it when ready.
Free material covers more of this exam than its price suggests. The exam guide, the sample questions, the security documentation and the KMS developer guide are all free, and between them they cover the key-policy and cross-account questions that decide the identity and data protection domains.
If your employer runs AWS, your best lab is the account you already have read access to. Reading real CloudTrail events, real GuardDuty findings and real bucket policies is free, closer to the exam than any course, and it is work you can justify on the clock.
50 percent retake or next-exam voucher
Passing an AWS exam earns a benefit in AWS Certification that includes a 50 percent discount voucher toward your next exam. Failing an exam does not earn one.
AWS Skill Builder free tier
The official exam prep course, the question sets, and the digital training are free on Skill Builder. The paid subscription adds labs and the official practice exam.
Free practice question set
AWS publishes an official set of sample questions for each exam at no cost, and it is the closest thing to the real wording you will find.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $300 at full price, with a 14 day wait after a failed attempt. There is no cap on attempts, but at this price two failures cost more than most people's entire prep budget.
Use the 14 days. The score report breaks the result down by the six domains, and on this exam a failure is usually one of two shapes: either the infrastructure and logging domains are weak, which is a knowledge gap, or every domain is middling, which means you sat it too early.
A uniformly middling report is the expensive result to misread. It looks like bad luck and it usually is not. Rebooking against it tends to produce the same spread a second time, because the missing thing is operational familiarity rather than facts.
If the identity and access domain scored low, the specific gap is nearly always the interaction between IAM policies, resource policies, permission boundaries and KMS key policies. That is a small, learnable set of rules about how permissions combine, and working through the documentation on it is worth more than a full retake of a course.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
AWS certifications last three years. Recertifying means passing the current version at full price, or passing a higher exam in the same track.
This is a specialty rather than a tier, so there is no higher exam that renews it automatically. Recertification here means sitting Security Specialty again, which makes it one of the more expensive credentials in this catalog to hold long term.
The 50 percent benefit voucher from your last pass applies to the recertification. Check it before booking rather than after; it is not applied automatically and it halves the cost.
Three years is long enough that the security service surface will have moved substantially. Treat recertification as genuine study rather than a formality, and expect services that did not exist at your first sitting to be examinable at your second.
Cycle length: 3 years. Recertify by passing the current version of this exam, or a higher one.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Security Specialty can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $450, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
The cheapest way to avoid the $300 line on this page is to be ready before you book. Free Security Specialty practice questions with a full explanation on every answer.
