SOA-C03

How much does AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer - Associate cost?

SOA-C03 costs $150, the standard AWS associate price. The exam replaced the SysOps Administrator Associate exam at the end of September 2025, and one thing changed that affects what you are buying: the exam guide now lists two response types, multiple choice and multiple response, and nothing else. The hands-on exam labs the old version was known for are not in it. Budget $150 if you already operate AWS estates daily, and up to $750 if you want a year of the paid Skill Builder subscription and a reserve for a second attempt.

Exam voucher$150The published US list price for one attempt at SOA-C03.
Retake$150A second attempt costs the same as the first.
Official practice exam on Skill BuilderVariesIncluded with the Skill Builder subscription. A free official question set is available without it.
AWS account for hands-on practiceVariesFree tier covers most of what these exams ask about. Set a billing alarm on day one.
Official exam guide$0Five domains with their exact share of scored content, the task statements under each, and the in-scope and out-of-scope service lists. It also carries a section comparing SOA-C02 with SOA-C03, which is the fastest way to see what moved.
AWS Skill Builder, free tier$0The exam prep course, the official question set and more than a thousand digital courses, none of it behind the subscription. For an operations exam the free question set matters, because the wording of a remediation question is half the difficulty.
Skill Builder individual subscription$29 a month, or $449 a yearOptional, and more defensible here than on most exams because the labs are the closest thing to console time you can buy. It is still not required, and a real AWS account teaches the same lessons for less.
AWS account for the lab$0 to startA new account opens on the free plan with up to $200 in credits over six months and more than 30 services free inside monthly limits. This is the exam where that account matters most: alarms, log groups, backup plans and Systems Manager documents are things you have either configured or not.
Console hoursThe real costAWS recommends a year of AWS operations experience and a year in a related operations role before this exam. Nothing on this page substitutes for that, and the candidates who fail have almost always tried to.
Retake reserve$150Only spent if you fail, and halved if you hold a recent AWS pass. The 14 day wait between attempts means a reserve buys a rebooking, not a same-week second try.

Ways to bring the cost down

Not failing is worth more than every discount on this page put together. A second attempt takes the exam line to $300. This is the associate exam with the strongest reputation for punishing candidates who studied services rather than operated them, so the cheapest thing you can do is spend the money you would have spent on a course inside a free-tier account instead: break something, then fix it while reading the alarm that told you.

Use the 50 percent benefit voucher. Passing any AWS exam puts one in your AWS Certification account for the next exam, so coming here from Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect Associate halves this fee. A failed attempt earns nothing.

Be careful which material you buy. SOA-C02 retired at the end of September 2025 and courses written for it are still on sale. Anything that spends a module preparing you for exam labs is out of date, containers were added to scope for SOA-C03, and the multi-account and infrastructure-as-code content is heavier than it was. Check the publication date before you pay, and check it against the current exam guide.

If you already operate AWS at work, that estate is your study material and your employer is the likely payer. Reading real CloudWatch alarms, real backup plans, real Systems Manager automation and a real multi-account structure covers more of this blueprint than any course, and a certification whose objectives map onto the systems the business runs is one of the easier training requests to get approved.

  • 50 percent retake or next-exam voucher

Passing an AWS exam earns a benefit in AWS Certification that includes a 50 percent discount voucher toward your next exam. Failing an exam does not earn one.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $150 at full price, with no partial credit and nothing carried forward from the first attempt.

AWS requires 14 calendar days after a failed attempt before you can sit the exam again, and sets no limit on the number of attempts. Once you pass, that exam is closed to you for two years unless AWS publishes a new version under a different code.

Check the benefit voucher in your AWS Certification account before rebooking. It applies to the next attempt, it is not applied for you, and on a $150 exam it is worth the two minutes it takes to look.

Results are a scaled score from 100 to 1,000 with 720 to pass, on a compensatory model, so a weak domain can be carried by the rest. The score report may classify your performance by section, and AWS advises reading that with caution because the sections are different sizes.

The failure that repeats is the one where the candidate knows what a service does but not what it does under pressure. Three domains sit at 22 percent each, and monitoring, reliability and deployment all ask the same underlying question: something is wrong or about to be, what do you do about it. If your first attempt came apart across all three rather than in one, that is an experience gap and 14 days of reading will not close it. Two weeks in a live account will get closer.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

Valid for three years. Recertifying means passing the current version at full price, with the 50 percent benefit voucher from your most recent pass applied, so it usually costs half.

Going up a level is the cheaper route. AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional recertifies this associate certification automatically, so operations people who continue along that track do not pay a separate CloudOps renewal.

This certification is also on the AWS maintenance list, which means paid Skill Builder subscription activities can extend it by one year without an exam. That is a delay rather than a renewal, and it is useful when the expiry lands in a bad quarter.

Expect the exam to have moved by the time you renew. It changed name, dropped its labs and added containers inside one revision, so a recertification three years out is real study rather than a formality. Budget one discounted sitting every three years and nothing in between.

Typical preparation budget

Preparation for CloudOps Engineer Associate can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $350, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.

Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
