Cost breakdown
AZ-305How much does Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert cost?
AZ-305 is $165 to sit, and passing it does not, on its own, make you an Azure Solutions Architect Expert. The credential is awarded for two things together: a pass on AZ-305 and the Azure Administrator Associate that AZ-104 grants. If you already hold AZ-104, budget $165 and the free Microsoft Learn material. If you do not, the real floor is two exams at $330, because the expert badge does not exist until both are done.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $165 | The published US list price for one attempt at AZ-305. |
| Retake | $165 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Microsoft Learn study path | $0 | Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it. |
| Azure free account for hands-on practice | $0 | Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about. |
| The other half of the credential (AZ-104) | $165 | The Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification requires the Azure Administrator Associate as well as an AZ-305 pass. If you do not hold it yet, this exam is still ahead of you, and pricing AZ-305 alone understates the credential by a full voucher. |
| Azure free account | $0 | Free tier services plus a starting credit. AZ-305 is a design exam rather than a configuration one, so a free account is enough to see the storage tiers, identity options and failover shapes the questions ask you to choose between. |
| Paid course or lab subscription | $0 to $300 | Optional, and more defensible here than on a fundamentals exam because the design reasoning is hard to self-sequence. It covers the same blueprint as the free path. |
| Retake reserve | $165 | Only spent if you fail. AZ-305 has case studies and real time pressure, and a first-attempt fail on pacing rather than knowledge is common enough to plan for. |

Ways to bring the cost down
The largest saving on this exam is passing it the first time. A second attempt takes the AZ-305 line to $330, which is more than every other cost on this page put together. AZ-305 punishes people who studied services in isolation rather than practicing the design decision the case studies actually ask for, so the cheapest thing you can do is rehearse full case studies under a clock before you book.
Do not pay twice for the same credential by accident. If you have not yet passed AZ-104, sequence it first: the Azure Administrator Associate is required for the expert badge, so passing AZ-305 while your AZ-104 has lapsed leaves you $165 down and still not certified. Check that your associate certification is current before you book the architect exam.
Use the free material properly. The Microsoft Learn path and the product documentation the questions are written from are the official preparation, and courses selling AZ-305 prep for several hundred dollars mostly reorganise them. If you are a verified student at an accredited institution, Microsoft sells exams at a reduced student rate, which is a straight cut off the $165.
Check the exam page before you book. Microsoft periodically runs offers that include a free retake with an exam purchase, and they appear and disappear without much notice. The free voucher offers attached to virtual training days have generally covered fundamentals exams rather than role-based ones, so do not build your AZ-305 budget around getting one.
Microsoft Learn free training
Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.
Student pricing
Microsoft sells fundamentals and role-based exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions, everywhere except India and China.
Free renewal
Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $165. There is no reduced price, no partial credit for the areas you passed, and nothing carries over from the first attempt.
Microsoft's timing rules are stricter than CompTIA's. You wait 24 hours after a failed first attempt, then 14 days before the third attempt and 14 days before each one after that, with a limit of five attempts on the same exam in twelve months.
The 24 hour window tempts people into rebooking immediately, and on this exam that is usually wrong. AZ-305 failures are often pacing failures rather than knowledge failures: the case studies are long, and reading one three times before answering burns the 120 minutes fast. If you ran out of time, the fix is timed practice, not more study, and a day is enough to change that.
Read the score report before you decide anything. Microsoft gives you a bar per skills area, so it tells you which design domain to redo. If infrastructure at 33 percent or identity, governance and monitoring at 28 percent scored low, those are the two heaviest domains and worth the most attention. Two attempts is $330, and a fortnight of case-study practice costs nothing.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
AZ-305 is valid for one year, and renewal is free. Microsoft opens an unproctored online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn six months before your expiry date. It is open book, you take it at your desk, and you can retake it if you do not pass. The cost is the hour it takes.
Both halves of the credential renew on their own annual clocks. The Azure Administrator Associate from AZ-104 renews the same free way, so holding the expert badge means keeping two role-based certifications current, each with its own free yearly assessment. Put both expiry dates in a calendar with a reminder at the six month mark, on the day you pass rather than eleven months later.
The thing to protect is the window, not the money. If a certification lapses you cannot renew it, and getting it back means paying $165 and sitting the full proctored exam again. That is the only expensive way to handle a renewal that is otherwise free.
Total cost of ownership after the exams is $0 and about an hour a year per certification. There is no annual maintenance fee of the kind ISC2 charges and no continuing education units to log the way CompTIA requires.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Azure Solutions Architect can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $300, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
