Head to head

Azure Administrator vs Azure Solutions Architect

AZ-104 certifies that you can operate Azure. AZ-305 certifies that you can design it for somebody else to operate.

AZ-104

Microsoft Azure Administrator

$165

AZ-305

Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert

$165

Microsoft names AZ-104 as a recommended prerequisite for AZ-305 and does not enforce it. In practice the architect exam assumes the administrator exam heavily enough that skipping it is expensive.

What it testsConfiguring things: identities, storage, networking, compute, monitoring.Choosing between options for a stated business requirement.
Question styleTask-shaped. What do you configure to achieve this.Case studies with constraints. Which design meets all of them.
Study timeEight to twelve weeks.Ten to sixteen weeks after AZ-104.
DifficultyHard without lab time, fair with it.Harder. Several designs work and one fits the constraints.
Typical rolesCloud administrator, systems administrator, infrastructure engineer.Solutions architect, lead engineer, consultant.
RenewalAnnual, free online assessment.Annual, free online assessment.

Which one to take first

AZ-104 first, in nearly every case. AZ-305 asks you to choose between services under constraints, and choosing well requires having configured them badly at least once.

The exception is somebody already designing Azure environments professionally. If you write architecture documents for a living, AZ-104 certifies a subset of your job and AZ-305 certifies the job.

Both renew annually through a free online assessment, so holding both is not twice the maintenance it looks like.

When the answer is the other one

  • Take AZ-305 instead if you already design rather than build

An architect who has not touched the portal in two years will still find AZ-305 the closer match, because it tests judgement about trade-offs rather than click paths. AZ-104 would spend three months certifying work you delegate.

  • Take AZ-900 instead if Azure is new

Both of these assume a working model of subscriptions, resource groups, regions and role assignments. Without that, AZ-104 study is spent building the model rather than learning administration, and $99 buys it in two weeks.

  • Take AWS Solutions Architect instead if your employer runs AWS

These certifications are worth what the local market pays for them. An Azure architect credential at an AWS company is a demonstration of aptitude rather than a qualification, and the equivalent AWS exam costs less.

The short version

AZ-104 then AZ-305 is the sequence, and the gap between them should be a job rather than a book.

AZ-305 alone is right only for people already doing design work who need the credential to match.

Frequently asked questions

Is AZ-104 required for AZ-305?

No. Microsoft lists it as recommended rather than required, so you may sit AZ-305 first. The exam assumes administrator-level knowledge throughout, which is why most people take them in order.

Which is harder?

AZ-305. AZ-104 has correct answers you can configure your way to. AZ-305 presents case studies where several designs function and only one satisfies every stated constraint.

Do both expire?

Both are role-based certifications and renew annually through a free online assessment in your Microsoft Learn profile. Fundamentals certifications like AZ-900 do not expire.
