Cost breakdown
AZ-400How much does Microsoft DevOps Engineer Expert cost?
The AZ-400 exam is $165, and that is not what the certification costs. DevOps Engineer Expert requires an associate certification first, so unless you already hold one the honest figure is $330 across two exams. Microsoft Learn is free, the practice assessment is free, and an Azure subscription for pipeline practice is cheap if you delete what you build. Budget $165 with the associate already behind you, and up to $465 if you add paid training and lab time.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $165 | The published US list price for one attempt at AZ-400. |
| Retake | $165 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Microsoft Learn study path | $0 | Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it. |
| Azure free account for hands-on practice | $0 | Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about. |
| Prerequisite certification | $165 | To become DevOps Engineer Expert you must first hold Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate. Passing AZ-400 without one earns the exam, not the certification. Note which of the two routes is still open: the AZ-204 exam behind Azure Developer Associate retired on 31 July 2026, so AZ-104 is the route you can still take. |
| Azure DevOps organization | $0 to start | The free tier gives a small number of parallel jobs and unlimited private repositories, which covers most of what the exam asks about pipelines, branching policy and artifacts. Paid parallel jobs matter for real teams, not for study. |
| GitHub | $0 | The exam covers GitHub as well as Azure DevOps, and a free account carries Actions minutes, branch protection and Advanced Security features on public repositories. Candidates who study only Azure Pipelines meet GitHub questions cold. |
| Microsoft Learn path and practice assessment | $0 | The official preparation, and the practice assessment is the closest free thing to the exam's question style. Paid courses reorganise this material rather than replacing it. |
| Azure subscription for lab work | $0 to $200 | Deployments need somewhere to land. App Service on a free or basic plan and a small AKS cluster cover the release-pipeline material; the cost creeps only if you leave the cluster running. |

Ways to bring the cost down
Count the prerequisite before anything else. AZ-400 alone is $165; DevOps Engineer Expert from a standing start is $330 and two study efforts, because Microsoft gates the certification on an associate credential. A budget built on the exam price alone is wrong by an exam.
Build the pipelines rather than reading about them. Fifty-four percent of this exam is designing and implementing build and release pipelines, which is more than the other four skill areas put together. A YAML pipeline you have written, broken and fixed is worth more than any course, and it costs nothing on the free tier.
Take the free practice assessment before booking. It is on the exam page, it is free, and on AZ-400 it does a specific job: the exam asks scenario questions with several defensible answers, and the assessment is where you learn how Microsoft chooses between them.
Watch the lab bill rather than the tooling bill. Azure DevOps and GitHub are free at study scale. The money leaks through an AKS cluster or an App Service plan left running between sessions, so delete the resource group after each one and set a budget alert on day one.
Microsoft Learn free training
Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.
Student pricing
Microsoft sells fundamentals and role-based exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions, everywhere except India and China.
Free renewal
Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $165. There is no reduced second-attempt price and no partial credit for the skill areas you passed.
The waiting rules are Microsoft's standard ladder: 24 hours after a first failure, then 14 days before the third attempt and before each one after that, with five attempts on the same exam allowed in twelve months.
The 24 hour window is a trap on this exam in particular. AZ-400 failures are usually design failures rather than knowledge gaps: the candidate knew what a deployment gate was and could not choose between two release strategies for a described organization. A day does not change how you reason about that.
Use the score report, which breaks the result down by skill area. If the bar is short under build and release pipelines you have lost the 54 percent domain, and no amount of revision on instrumentation, which is 7 percent, will compensate. Rebuild a multi-stage pipeline with approvals and environments from an empty project before booking again.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
AZ-400 is valid for one year and renewal is free. Microsoft opens an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn six months before your expiry date; it is open book, you take it at your desk, and you can retake it if it does not go well.
Protect the window rather than the money. A lapsed certification cannot be renewed, and recovering it means paying $165 and sitting the full proctored exam again. Put the date in a calendar on the day you pass.
The expert certification has a second clock. The associate certification underneath it also expires annually, so somebody holding Azure Administrator Associate and DevOps Engineer Expert has two renewal assessments a year rather than one.
Total cost of ownership after the exam is $0 and about an hour a year. There is no maintenance fee and no continuing education units to log.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Azure DevOps Engineer can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $300, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
