Cost breakdown
AZ-500How much does Microsoft Azure Security Engineer cost?
AZ-500 costs $165 to sit, and renews free. Microsoft publishes the complete study path at no charge and the Azure free account covers most of the hands-on work, but this is an advanced exam that assumes you already administer Azure. Budget $165 if you do, and up to $550 if you want paid training and a retake held back.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $165 | The published US list price for one attempt at AZ-500. |
| Retake | $165 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Microsoft Learn study path | $0 | Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it. |
| Azure free account for hands-on practice | $0 | Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about. |
| Microsoft Learn AZ-500 study path | $0 | The free official path, covering all four skill areas. Written by the team that publishes the skills outline. |
| Azure free account | $0 on the free tier, with a spending cap | Enough to build network security groups, a Key Vault, a managed identity and Defender for Cloud recommendations. This exam is configuration-heavy, so the lab matters more than on the fundamentals exams. |
| Microsoft Entra ID P2 trial | $0 for the trial period | Conditional Access, Privileged Identity Management and Identity Protection are all examinable and all need P2. Start the trial deliberately, in one concentrated block, rather than on day one. |
| Azure security documentation | $0 | Free, and where the harder answers live. The distinction between RBAC, Azure Policy and resource locks decides more questions than any single service does. |
| Paid video course | $0 to $200 | Optional. Useful for structure across four broad domains, but nothing in it is unavailable free. |
| Retake reserve | $165 | Only spent if you fail. AZ-500 is an advanced exam and a first-attempt failure is common for people who came straight from AZ-104. |

Ways to bring the cost down
The single biggest cost reduction on any Microsoft exam is that the official training is free. Microsoft Learn's AZ-500 path is complete, and paid courses cover the same ground with a different presenter. A self-study pass is $165.
Sequence the P2 trial rather than starting it on day one. The trial is time limited, and the P2 features are concentrated in one skill area. Do your identity, network and storage work on the free tier first, then start the trial when you are ready to spend a focused block on Conditional Access, Privileged Identity Management and Identity Protection.
Student pricing and free Virtual Training Days both apply here as on every Microsoft exam. Verified students get a reduced rate, and Microsoft's free security training days have carried exam vouchers for attendees.
The real saving is not sitting it too early. AZ-500 assumes AZ-104 level administration, and candidates who arrive without it fail on operational detail rather than on security concepts. If you cannot already build and secure a virtual network without looking it up, the cheaper path is more Azure exposure rather than more study material.
Microsoft Learn free training
Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.
Student pricing
Microsoft sells fundamentals and role-based exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions.
Free renewal
Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $165 at full price, under Microsoft's standard rules: 24 hours before a second attempt, 14 days before the third and each after it, and five attempts maximum on the same exam in twelve months.
The score report breaks the result down by the four skill areas, and on this exam that breakdown is genuinely diagnostic because the areas test different kinds of knowledge rather than different products.
If identity and access scored low, that is 28 percent of the exam and it is where the P2 features live. This is the area most likely to be weak for someone who did their prep entirely on the free tier without ever starting the trial.
If security operations scored low, the gap is usually Defender for Cloud and Sentinel: what each one is for, what a secure score actually measures, and which alerts land where. That is portal familiarity, and a fortnight in a lab tenant is worth more than another course.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
Role-based Microsoft certifications last one year and renew free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. The only cost is your time.
The assessment is open book, unproctored and retryable, and it targets what has changed rather than re-examining the whole syllabus. There is no reason to let this one lapse and no reason to pay for it.
The window opens six months before expiry. If it lapses you sit the full $165 exam again, so set a reminder the day you pass rather than trusting yourself to remember in eleven months.
Azure security changes faster than most of this catalog, so the annual assessment is a reasonable amount of work rather than a formality. Expect it to ask about services that did not exist when you first passed.
Cycle length: 1 year. Free online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn each year.
