How hard is Azure Security Engineer?

Microsoft Azure classifies Azure Security Engineer at the advanced level. It is multiple choice, drag-and-drop, hot area, and case studies, sat in 120 minutes. No invented pass rates anywhere on this page.

The short answer

Microsoft Azure Security Engineer is an advanced exam. It is written for experienced practitioners, and the questions assume judgment built from real work rather than memorized definitions.

With several years in the field, the difficulty is breadth: domains you have read about but never worked in. Without that experience, read the objectives list domain by domain before booking. It is the honest measure of how much of this is new to you.

What actually makes it hard

  • The items are not all multiple choice.

Multiple choice and multiple response, plus drag-and-drop ordering, hot area items where you click a region of a screenshot, and case studies that hold one scenario across several linked questions. They take longer than a multiple-choice question, and you have to perform the task rather than recognize an answer.

  • Breadth across domains.

The blueprint spans 4 domains and the exam samples all of them. The heaviest, Manage identity and access, is 28 percent of the exam; the lightest, Secure compute, storage, and databases, 22 percent.

  • The clock.

40 to 60 questions in 120 minutes is about 3 minutes each at the low end of that range, and less at the top of it, including the time to read the stem and the options. Reading about the exam does not rehearse that pace; a full-length sitting against the clock does.

Where the weight sits

Difficulty is not spread evenly. Microsoft Azure publishes the domain weightings, and they tell you where your study time buys the most points:

  • Manage identity and access28%
  • Manage security operations28%
  • Secure networking22%
  • Secure compute, storage, and databases22%

Where candidates struggle: Identity and security operations are 56 percent together. Build a lab tenant and configure conditional access and Defender for Cloud yourself; the exam asks what happens, not what the feature is called.

What to hold first

Microsoft Azure recommends coming to Azure Security Engineer with Azure Administrator level knowledge. That is a recommendation, not a gate: nothing stops you booking directly. Skipping it does not remove the assumed material; it moves it into your study plan.
