How much does Cisco CCNP Security (SCOR core) cost?

Know what you are buying. $400 is the core exam and $700 is the certification. Every plan that budgets for SCOR alone is a concentration exam short, and that is the most common costing mistake on the Cisco professional track.

The core exam is not wasted if you stop there. Passing SCOR earns a specialist certification in its own right and counts toward CCIE Security, so the money buys something even if the concentration never happens.

Virtualise before you buy hardware. Cisco Modeling Labs and virtual appliance images cover much of the blueprint, and second-hand hardware is worth buying only for the specific gear a chosen concentration demands.

Employer funding is more available on this track than most, because Cisco partner requirements attach to it directly. Ask before paying personally; the partner-level requirement is often the reason the training budget exists.

A retake is another $400 at full price, which is the most expensive single retake in this catalog outside the AWS professional exams.

Cisco's waiting period between attempts is short compared with Google's or Microsoft's ladder, so the constraint on rebooking is the fee rather than the calendar. That cuts both ways: nothing stops you sitting again quickly, and nothing about a quick resit fixes an experience gap.

Cisco does not publish a passing score for its professional exams and uses a variable scaled score, so a failure does not come with a threshold you can reason about. The score report shows performance by domain, which is the part worth studying.

The reliable failure point is breadth. SCOR spans network security, cloud, content security, endpoint and secure access, and candidates who work deeply with one product family meet four others. If the domain report is even and low rather than spiky, that is a coverage problem and more depth in your strongest area will not fix it.

CCNP Security is valid for three years, and Cisco offers three routes: continuing education credits, passing another professional or expert level exam, or sitting the exams again.

The continuing education route costs credits rather than money, and Cisco awards them for training many working engineers are doing anyway. It works when treated as something accumulated from the month you pass rather than something scrambled for in the last quarter of year three.

Passing a higher exam renews it as a side effect, so anybody working toward CCIE Security has the renewal question answered by the journey.

The route to avoid is sitting both exams again, which is $700 every three years and the most expensive way to stand still. Nobody plans for it; people arrive at it by letting the cycle lapse, so the calendar entry belongs in the week you pass.
