Cost breakdown
CKSHow much does Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist cost?
CKS is $445 and registration includes a second attempt and two simulator sessions, so for somebody who already holds CKA the exam line is the whole cost. The part people miss is the entry requirement: you must have passed CKA before you may sit CKS, so from a standing start the real figure is two exams at $445 each. Budget $445 if CKA is already behind you, and up to $900 if you add a paid course or a lab subscription.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $445 | The published US list price for one attempt at CKS. |
| Retake | Included | Registration includes a second attempt at no extra cost. |
| Killer.sh exam simulator | $0 | Two sessions are included with the exam registration. |
| Active CKA requirement | Varies | Sitting CKS requires a current CKA, so budget the pair together if you hold neither. |
| Free retake, included | Included | Registration carries one retake at no extra cost, which is why the retake line on this page is zero. On a two-hour hands-on exam that is worth more than it sounds: the first sitting can be treated as a real attempt rather than a rehearsal. |
| Exam simulator | Included | Two simulator attempts come with registration, each with 36 hours of access from the moment you activate it. Thirty-six hours is long enough to work the session, read every answer and come back to it, which is how it should be used. |
| CKA, required first | $445 | The Linux Foundation states that CKS candidates must have taken and passed the CKA exam before attempting CKS. It is a gate rather than a recommendation, so a candidate starting from nothing is budgeting two exams and two study efforts, not one. |
| Practice cluster | $0 | kind or minikube on your own machine covers most of the curriculum, and the security work in particular is cheap to practice: admission control, network policies, RBAC, seccomp and AppArmor profiles all run on a laptop cluster. |
| Kubernetes documentation | $0 | The exam is open book against the documentation. On CKS that matters more than on CKA, because the security primitives carry long YAML shapes that nobody writes from memory under time pressure. |
| Paid course or lab subscription | $0 to $400 | Optional. Worth it mainly for runtime detection and supply chain tooling, which are the two areas hardest to practice convincingly on a laptop. |

Ways to bring the cost down
Count the prerequisite before you budget. CKS on its own is $445, and CKS for somebody who does not yet hold CKA is $890 across two exams plus two study efforts. Every plan that treats this as a single purchase is wrong by an exam.
Never pay list price if the calendar allows. The Linux Foundation discounts certifications several times a year, and CKS is expensive enough that timing the purchase saves more than any other decision on this page. The discount applies to the bundle that includes CKA, which is the cheaper route if both exams are still ahead of you.
The included retake is real money. A comparable hands-on exam plus a paid second attempt plus a simulator would cost more than $445 bought separately, so the headline price flatters the exam once you count what is inside it.
Your lab is free. Every hardening task in the curriculum runs on a local cluster: RBAC, network policies, admission control, seccomp, AppArmor, image scanning and audit logging. Paying for infrastructure to practice this exam is optional in a way it is not for the installation work CKA tests.
One free retake included
CKS registration includes a second attempt at no extra cost.
Frequent seasonal discounts
The Linux Foundation discounts certification bundles several times a year. Paying list price is usually avoidable.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
There is no retake fee for a first failure. Registration includes one retake, so the second attempt costs nothing but the wait and the preparation.
That changes the booking calculus. On an exam where a second attempt is another full fee the sensible advice is to wait until you are comfortable; here the first sitting has no marginal cost, and there is real value in meeting the format, the terminal and the two-hour clock for real.
Use it deliberately rather than casually. A failed attempt still returns which curriculum areas were weak, and the three heaviest domains are Minimize Microservice Vulnerabilities, Supply Chain Security, and Monitoring, Logging and Runtime Security at 20 percent each. Sixty percent of the exam sits in those three, and a second failure usually comes from the same place as the first.
If both attempts go, a further sitting is a new registration at full price. That is the point at which the money argument and the study argument agree: remediate properly, on a cluster, before booking again.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
CKS is valid for two years. Renewal means passing the current exam again; the Linux Foundation runs no continuing education scheme, so there are no credits to accumulate and nothing to pay in place of sitting it.
Two clocks run, not one. CKA is also a two-year certification and it is the exam that lets you sit CKS in the first place, so somebody holding both is managing two renewal dates rather than one. Passing them in the same season keeps those dates together, which is worth planning on the day you book rather than discovering in year two.
The seasonal discounts apply to renewals as much as to first sittings, so the real cost of staying current is lower than the list price implies for anybody willing to wait for a sale.
Two years is a genuinely short cycle for this subject, and that is the right call rather than an inconvenience. Kubernetes security moves with the platform: admission control changed shape with Pod Security Admission, and the tooling around supply chain attestation has not stopped moving. A renewal here is study, not a formality.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for CKS can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $400, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
