CKA vs CKS
This is not a choice. CKS requires an active CKA before you may sit it, so the only question is whether to go on to CKS after passing CKA.
Both are two-hour practical exams in a live cluster at $445 each. CKS assumes everything CKA covers and adds hardening, supply chain and runtime security on top.

Which one to take first
CKA, necessarily. The Linux Foundation will not let you sit CKS without an active CKA, so the sequence is fixed.
Take CKS afterwards only if cluster security is actually your work or your next role. It covers admission control, image scanning, runtime detection and policy engines, which is a specialist remit rather than general platform work.
Watch the renewal coupling. CKS depends on an active CKA, so letting the CKA lapse takes the CKS with it. Both run on two-year cycles and need planning together rather than separately.
When the answer is the other one
Take CKAD instead if you deploy rather than operate
Both CKA and CKS are operator certifications. If your work is shipping applications onto a cluster somebody else runs, the whole sequence is aimed at another team and CKAD covers the manifests, probes and configuration you actually author.
Stop at CKA if security is not your remit
CKS is $445 and two months for a specialism many platform engineers never own. Unless you are the person configuring admission controllers and responding to runtime alerts, that time buys more as production experience or as a cloud certification on the platform you run.
Take KCNA first if Kubernetes is new
CKA assumes container fluency and comfort with the command line under time pressure. KCNA is multiple choice and considerably cheaper, and it builds the vocabulary that makes CKA study tractable rather than bewildering.

CKS after, only if cluster security is your job or your next one. It is a specialism, not a level.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take CKS without CKA?
No. An active CKA certification is a hard requirement for sitting CKS, and the Linux Foundation checks it. CKAD does not satisfy the requirement.
What happens to my CKS if my CKA expires?
CKS depends on an active CKA, so allowing the CKA to lapse affects the CKS as well. Both certifications run on two-year cycles and should be renewed together.
Is CKS harder than CKA?
Yes for most people. The scope is narrower but the tooling is less familiar, and it assumes CKA-level cluster fluency as a starting point rather than as material to be tested.
