DP-420

How much does Azure Cosmos DB Developer Specialty cost?

The DP-420 exam is $165 and the lab is close to free, because Azure Cosmos DB has a free tier that covers everything the exam asks you to build. The material is free on Microsoft Learn. This is a specialty exam about one service, so the real cost is study time rather than money. Budget $165 for a self-studied attempt and up to $465 if you add paid training and higher-throughput lab time.

Exam voucher$165The published US list price for one attempt at DP-420.
Retake$165A second attempt costs the same as the first.
Microsoft Learn study path$0Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it.
Azure free account for hands-on practice$0Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about.
Microsoft Learn path and practice assessment$0The official preparation, and the free practice assessment is on the exam page. DP-420 is a design exam wearing a developer badge, and the assessment is where you find out whether your partition key reasoning matches Microsoft's.
Cosmos DB free tier$0One free-tier account per subscription carries a standing allowance of provisioned throughput and storage. It is enough to build containers, test partition keys, watch request unit charges and run the change feed.
Cosmos DB emulator$0Runs locally and costs nothing at all. Good for SDK work and query practice; not a substitute for watching real request unit consumption, which is what the optimization domain is about.
Provisioned throughput beyond the free allowanceHourlyOnly needed if you want to see autoscale and multi-region writes behave for real. Worth one deliberate session, and worth deleting immediately afterwards.
Paid training$0 to $300Optional. Data modelling and partitioning is 38 percent of this exam and the hardest thing to self-assess, so structured material has more of a case here than on most specialty exams.

Ways to bring the cost down

The free tier covers the exam. One free-tier Cosmos DB account plus the local emulator is enough for the modelling, integration and maintenance domains, which is most of the curriculum.

Spend the study time where the weight is. Designing and implementing data models is 38 percent of this exam, and it is a thinking skill rather than a spending one: model the same workload three ways, look at the request unit cost of each, and the lesson lands.

Delete provisioned throughput the day you finish with it. Autoscale and multi-region writes are the only items that cost real money here, and they are one-session experiments rather than ongoing infrastructure.

Do not buy a course to learn the SDK. The documentation and the quickstarts cover it, and the exam cares more about why a partition key is wrong than about the syntax of a query.

  • Microsoft Learn free training

Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $165 at full price.

Microsoft's ladder applies: 24 hours, then 14 days before the third attempt and each after it, five attempts in twelve months.

Failures here are usually modelling failures. Data models are 38 percent of the exam and maintenance is 28 percent, so two thirds of it sits in modelling and operations; distribution and integration are 8 percent each and are not where a retake plan should start.

Between attempts, take a workload you actually understand and model it for Cosmos DB twice, once denormalised and once split across containers, then compare request unit costs for the reads that matter. That exercise answers most of the questions this exam asks.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

DP-420 is valid for one year and renews free through the unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn, opening six months before expiry.

The assessment tracks the current skills outline. Cosmos DB has gained capability steadily, and the renewal is a cheap way to notice what changed.

Let it lapse and there is no renewal route: recovery is $165 and the full proctored exam again.

Ongoing cost is $0 and about an hour a year, which is the standard Microsoft position across every role-based and specialty certification.

Typical preparation budget

Preparation for Cosmos DB Developer can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $300, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.

Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
