Cost breakdown
DP-900How much does Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals cost?
DP-900 is $99 for the exam, and genuinely $0 for everything else you need. Microsoft publishes the full study path free on Microsoft Learn, and the Azure free account gives you a place to create the databases and analytics services the exam describes. Budget $99 if you stay on the free material, and up to $150 if you want a paid video course and money set aside for a second attempt.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $99 | The published US list price for one attempt at DP-900. |
| Retake | $99 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| Microsoft Learn study path | $0 | Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it. |
| Azure free account for hands-on practice | $0 | Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about. |
| Microsoft Learn DP-900 study path | $0 | The free official path, written by the team that publishes the skills outline. It covers all four skill areas and it is the only material you strictly need. |
| Azure free account | $0 | Free tier services plus a starting credit. Enough to create a SQL Database, a Cosmos DB account and a storage container, so the vocabulary attaches to something you have actually built. |
| Paid video course | $0 to $50 | Optional. Helpful if you prefer being talked through the service names, but it covers the same ground as the free path. |
| Retake reserve | $99 | Only spent if you fail. Setting it aside is what keeps a second attempt from feeling like a fresh decision. |

Ways to bring the cost down
There is very little to cut here, which is the point. The exam is $99, the official study path is free, and the Azure free account is free. Anyone charging you several hundred dollars to prepare for DP-900 is reselling Microsoft Learn with a different font.
If you are a verified student at an accredited institution, Microsoft sells fundamentals exams at a reduced student rate, which takes a slice off the only real cost. Microsoft also runs free Virtual Training Days on data topics, and some sessions have carried an exam voucher for attendees. For a $99 exam, one of those takes the whole cost to nothing.
The trap specific to this exam is over-preparing. DP-900 asks what a service is for and when it fits, never how to run a production workload, so you do not need paid data volumes or a licensed tool to answer anything. Create the free-tier resources in your final week, click through what the exam names, and stop.
If you are studying with colleagues, the free path scales at no cost. A weekly 45 minute session where each person explains one skill area to the others is worth more than a course, because a shaky grasp of structured against semi-structured shows up the moment someone has to say the words out loud.
Microsoft Learn free training
Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.
Student pricing
Microsoft sells fundamentals and role-based exams at a reduced student rate to verified students at accredited institutions, everywhere except India and China.
Free renewal
Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake is another $99, at full price. There is no reduced price and no partial credit for the skill areas you already passed.
Microsoft's timing rules are the same across its exams: 24 hours before a second attempt, then 14 days before the third and each attempt after that, with a cap of five attempts on the same exam in twelve months.
The 24 hour window is short enough that people rebook the same evening, which is usually wrong. A failed DP-900 almost always points at one skill area rather than a general shortfall, and one day does not close a real gap.
Read the score report before you decide anything. Microsoft gives you a bar per skill area, so it tells you exactly which part of the Learn path to redo. Two attempts is $198, and a few more evenings on the weak area cost nothing.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
This is the best part of the DP-900 economics: fundamentals certifications do not expire. There is no renewal, no continuing education requirement, and no annual fee. You pay $99 once and the credential is yours to keep.
That is unusual and it is specific to the fundamentals level. Microsoft's role-based certifications such as DP-100 or the Azure administrator track last one year and renew free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. If you go on to one of those, budget the annual hour rather than an annual fee.
Set against a CompTIA certification, where three years of continuing education units and a maintenance fee are the norm, or an ISC2 credential with its yearly fee, the total cost of ownership on DP-900 is $99 and then nothing.
The credential does not expire, but the content ages. Service names and portal layouts move, so read the current skills outline again before you quote DP-900 in an interview a year later. Your certificate stays valid; your vocabulary is the part that needs a refresh.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Azure Data Fundamentals can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $150, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
