How much does Professional Cloud Developer cost?

Professional Cloud Developer is $200, and it is one of the cheapest professional exams to prepare for because the services it centers on have generous free tiers: Cloud Run scales to zero, and the always-free allowances cover most of what the curriculum asks you to build. Budget $200 for a self-studied attempt and up to $700 with paid training and a retake reserve.

Google Skills learning pathVariesGoogle publishes a learning path for each exam. Some of it is free and some sits behind a subscription, so check the price before you buy anything.
Exam guide$0Four sections with weightings. Designing cloud-native applications is 32 percent, deployment 24 percent, integration 21 percent and building and testing 23 percent, so design carries nearly a third of the exam.
Cloud RunFree tier, then per requestScales to zero, so a deployed service that nobody calls costs nothing. That makes it the ideal place to practice the 24 percent deployment section without watching a meter.
Free trial credit$300, for 90 daysMore than enough. The one place it disappears is GKE, where a cluster bills while it exists whether or not anything is deployed on it.
GKE clusterHourly while it existsNeeded for the container half of the deployment section. Create it for the session, work through the material, delete the cluster rather than the workloads.
Paid learning path$0 to $400Optional. The documentation and quickstarts cover the services; paid material is worth considering for the observability and troubleshooting section if that has never been your responsibility.

Ways to bring the cost down

Live in Cloud Run for as long as the curriculum allows. It scales to zero, deploys in seconds and covers containers, revisions, traffic splitting and service identity, which is a large share of the exam for almost no money.

Treat GKE as a scheduled session rather than a standing cluster. It is the only resource here that bills while idle, and the exam asks about deployment patterns rather than cluster operations, which is CKA's subject not this one's.

Design is 32 percent of the exam and free to study. Data access patterns, API design and security decisions are reasoning rather than infrastructure, and the documentation covers them completely.

Pass first time: $200 twice is more than every other cost on this page combined, and the 14, 60 and 365 day waiting ladder makes a failure expensive in calendar terms too.

  • 50 percent renewal code

Passing puts a 50 percent discount code in the Benefits section of your CM Connect account, and you can apply it to your renewal attempt. Failing does not earn one.

  • Free tier and trial credits

Over 20 Google Cloud products have a free monthly usage tier, and new customers get $300 in credits on signup. That covers most of the hands-on work these exams ask about if you delete what you build.

For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $200, full price, no partial credit.

The waiting ladder is 14 days, 60 days, then 365, with four attempts in any two-year period.

Google publishes no passing score and gives no section report, so a failure is a result rather than a diagnosis.

The pattern behind most failures is a developer who knows their own stack and has never chosen between Google's storage services under a stated constraint. Between attempts, take one application you know and write down which of Firestore, Cloud SQL, Spanner and Bigtable it belongs on, and why the other three are wrong. That exercise answers a surprising share of this exam.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

Professional Cloud Developer is valid for two years, with the renewal window opening 60 days before expiry.

Renewal means passing the applicable exam inside the window and exam fees apply; shorter renewal exams and a Google Skills route exist where supported.

Sixty days of notice is short. Put the date in a calendar on the day you pass, because a lapsed certification means the full exam at full price with no renewal discount.

The discount code Google issues after a pass applies to a renewal attempt, which is the cheapest way to hold this certification across four years.

Typical preparation budget

Preparation for Cloud Developer can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $400, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.

Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.

The cheapest way to avoid the $200 line on this page is to be ready before you book. Free Cloud Developer practice questions with a full explanation on every answer.
