How much does Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer cost?

Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer is $200. Half the curriculum is site reliability practice and observability, which are read and reasoned about rather than built, and the half that is built runs comfortably inside the $300 trial credit. Budget $200 for a self-studied attempt and up to $700 with paid training and a retake reserve.

Google Skills learning pathVariesGoogle publishes a learning path for each exam. Some of it is free and some sits behind a subscription, so check the price before you buy anything.
Exam guide$0Five sections. CI/CD and observability are 25 percent each, bootstrapping the organization is 20 percent and SRE practice 18 percent, so pipelines and telemetry together are half the exam.
Google's SRE books$0Free to read online, and they are the source of the vocabulary this exam uses. Service level objectives, error budgets and toil are tested as Google defines them, not as the industry loosely uses them.
Cloud Build and Artifact RegistryFree tier, then meteredFree allowances cover study-scale pipeline work. This is the cheapest part of the curriculum to practice properly.
Cloud ObservabilityFree allowance, then per volumeLogging and monitoring bill by ingested volume, with a monthly free allowance that a study project will not exhaust unless you point a chatty workload at it and leave it running.
Paid learning path$0 to $400Optional. Least necessary of the professional exams, because the two most heavily weighted sections are covered by free material Google wrote.

Ways to bring the cost down

Read the SRE books before buying anything. Error budgets, service level objectives and toil are 18 percent of the exam directly and color the way another 25 percent is asked, and the source is free.

Build one pipeline properly rather than five partially. Cloud Build, Artifact Registry and a deployment to Cloud Run cover the CI/CD section at almost no cost, and the exam asks about pipeline design rather than about tool trivia.

Watch log ingestion rather than compute. On this curriculum the meter that moves is observability volume, and it moves when a noisy workload is left running against it.

Pass first time. Two attempts is $400 and the retake ladder of 14, 60 and 365 days makes a second failure expensive against a two-year certification cycle.

  • 50 percent renewal code

Passing puts a 50 percent discount code in the Benefits section of your CM Connect account, and you can apply it to your renewal attempt. Failing does not earn one.

  • Free tier and trial credits

Over 20 Google Cloud products have a free monthly usage tier, and new customers get $300 in credits on signup. That covers most of the hands-on work these exams ask about if you delete what you build.

For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $200 at full price.

Waiting periods are 14 days, then 60, then 365, with four attempts in any two-year period.

There is no published passing score and no section breakdown, so a failure tells you only that it happened.

Most failures are vocabulary failures rather than tooling ones: candidates who use service level objective and service level agreement interchangeably in practice find the exam does not. Between attempts, define an SLO and an error budget for a service you actually run, and write down what you would stop doing when the budget is spent.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

This is a Professional certification: two years of validity, and the renewal window opens 60 days before expiry.

Renewal means passing the applicable exam in that window, with exam fees applying. Shorter renewal exams and a Google Skills learning route exist for certifications that support them.

The SRE half of this curriculum ages slowly; the tooling half does not. A renewal is mostly about what changed in Cloud Build, Artifact Registry and Cloud Observability rather than in the practice.

The post-pass discount code applies to a renewal attempt, so a four-year hold costs less than two full-price exams if you use it.
