Domain breakdown and official weightings
From the official Google Cloud exam guides. Building and implementing CI/CD pipelines, including continuous testing is the heaviest domain at 25 percent, followed by Implementing observability practices and troubleshooting issues at 25 percent.
- Bootstrapping and maintaining a Google Cloud organization20%
- Building and implementing CI/CD pipelines, including continuous testing25%
- Applying site reliability engineering practices18%
- Implementing observability practices and troubleshooting issues25%
- Optimizing performance and cost12%
Where to focus: CI/CD and observability are 25 percent each, so half the exam sits in two sections that reward having actually built a pipeline and read a trace. Optimizing performance and cost is the smallest at 12 percent and the one most often skipped entirely.
What comes after passing
Professional certifications last two years, one year less than the foundational and associate ones. Renewing means passing the $200 exam again inside the 60 day eligibility window, with the 50 percent code from your last pass applied.
Costs across the full renewal cycle are on the Cloud DevOps Engineer cost page.
Frequently asked questions
How much SRE theory is on it?
One section of five, at 18 percent, but the vocabulary runs through the whole exam. Service level indicators, objectives and error budgets appear in the observability section too, so treating SRE as a single block to revise underestimates it.
Is this a Kubernetes exam?
No. GKE appears throughout, but the exam is about pipelines, telemetry and incident response rather than cluster internals. Someone with CKA will still need the observability and FinOps material.
What is the largest section?
Two tie at 25 percent: building CI/CD pipelines, and implementing observability and troubleshooting. Together they are half the exam, and both are hands-on rather than conceptual.
How long is it valid?
Two years, one less than the foundational and associate certifications. Renewal means passing the full exam again.
