A worked example

Shown solved, with the whole explanation open: this is what every question here carries.

Network TroubleshootingModerate

A technician suspects either a duplex mismatch or a failing patch cable on an access port. During one maintenance step they reseat the cable and force the interface speed, and the errors stop. What has been lost?

Correct.

The concept

A fix is only useful if it can be repeated. Manipulating a single element per attempt is what ties an outcome back to a cause, and an unattributed recovery leaves the same fault unsolved next time.

Why this answer

Two variables moved together means either one, or the interaction between them, could have cleared the errors. The port works now, but the same symptom on another port starts the diagnosis over.

  • ACounters survive the change and can still be read; nothing about them was destroyed by reseating a cable.
  • BApproval belongs to the change ticket, not to the fault itself.
  • Correct: an unattributed fix does not carry forward.
  • DPort defaults are recoverable at any point from the running configuration. That is a rollback concern, not an attribution one.

Sample question 1 of 3

Network TroubleshootingModerate

A team books an after hours window to chase an intermittent routing fault. They accept that the window may close before the cause is found, and the network must be handed back working. What practice makes that possible?

Sample question 2 of 3

Network TroubleshootingModerate

After adjusting one QoS setting on the edge switch, a technician moves straight to the next suspected cause. Nobody has spoken to the affected users since the ticket opened. Which step of the process was skipped?

Sample question 3 of 3

Network TroubleshootingEasy

A DHCP scope exhaustion is solved at one site on a Friday. Two months later the same symptom appears at another site, worked by a different technician. What lets the second technician start from what was already learned?
