The SC-100 exam is $165, and the certification cannot be earned on that alone: Cybersecurity Architect Expert requires an associate security certification first. From a standing start that is $330 across two exams. Everything else is free, because this is a design exam with no lab to build. Ways to bring the cost down
Budget two exams unless you already hold one of the three qualifying associates. $165 buys the exam; $330 is what the expert certification costs from nothing.
Check which prerequisite to take, not just that you need one. AZ-500 retires on 31 August 2026, so a candidate choosing a prerequisite now should be looking at SC-300 or SC-200, both of which stay earnable and both of which this catalog covers.
There is no lab bill on this exam, which makes it one of the cheapest expert-level certifications to prepare for. Money that would go to a subscription on AZ-700 or AZ-140 has nowhere to go here.

A retake is another $165 with no reduced rate and no partial credit.
The waiting ladder is Microsoft's standard one: 24 hours after the first failure, then 14 days before the third attempt and each one after, with five attempts allowed in twelve months.
SC-100 failures are rarely knowledge failures. The four skill areas are evenly weighted between 23 and 27 percent, so there is no single domain to blame, and the usual cause is answering as an engineer rather than as an architect: choosing the control that works instead of the one that fits the stated business and compliance constraints.
Between attempts, practice reading a scenario for constraints before looking at the options: regulatory obligation, existing estate, budget, appetite for operational change. That habit moves more marks on this exam than any additional product knowledge.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
SC-100 is valid for one year and renewal is free through an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn, with the window opening six months before expiry.
The expert certification carries a second clock: the qualifying associate also expires annually, so holding both means two renewal assessments a year.
The English version of this certification was updated on 28 July 2026, and the renewal assessment tracks the current skills outline rather than the one you sat. On a security architecture exam that is a feature, since Microsoft's own guidance is what moved.
Running cost after the exam is $0 and an hour or two a year, against ISC2's annual maintenance fee for CISSP or CompTIA's continuing education requirements.
