Cost breakdown

SC-200

How much does Microsoft Security Operations Analyst cost?

SC-200 costs $165 to sit, and renews free. Microsoft publishes the whole study path on Microsoft Learn at no charge, and every product the exam covers, Microsoft Sentinel, Defender XDR, Defender for Cloud, has a trial that gives you the real portal. Budget $165 if you stay on free material, and up to $550 if you want a paid course and a retake in reserve.

Retake$165A second attempt costs the same as the first.
Microsoft Learn study path$0Free, and it is the official material. Nothing you buy replaces it.
Azure free account for hands-on practice$0Free tier plus a starting credit. Enough to build and break the services the exam asks about.
Microsoft Learn SC-200 study path$0The free official path, written by the team that publishes the skills outline. It covers all four skill areas and is the only material strictly required.
Microsoft 365 and Defender trial tenant$0 for the trial periodGives you the real Defender XDR portal with incidents to triage. Trials are time limited, so start one when the exam is close rather than on day one.
Azure free account with a Sentinel workspace$0 on the free tier, with a spending capSentinel bills on data ingested, so this is the one Microsoft lab that can cost real money. Keep connectors minimal and set a cap before you connect anything.
KQL practice$0Microsoft runs a free public Log Analytics demo environment with real data to query. KQL is examinable and it is the part of SC-200 you cannot bluff.
Paid video course$0 to $200Optional. Covers the same ground as the free path, and helps if you prefer being walked through portal navigation.
Retake reserve$165Only spent if you fail. Two attempts is $330, which is still less than most bootcamps charge for one course.

Ways to bring the cost down

The free path is the official path. Microsoft writes the skills outline and the training, and anyone selling a several-hundred-dollar SC-200 course is repackaging Microsoft Learn. A self-study pass is $165.

Two real discounts exist. Verified students at accredited institutions get a reduced exam rate from Microsoft. Microsoft also runs free Virtual Training Days on security topics, and some sessions have carried an exam voucher for attendees, which would take the cost of this exam to nothing.

The renewal position is the quiet saving. Role-based Microsoft certifications renew free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so unlike CompTIA or Cisco there is no recurring fee to plan for. The lifetime cost of holding SC-200 is the $165 you paid once.

The trap specific to this exam is Sentinel ingestion. A workspace is free to create and bills on data volume, so a lab left connected to a chatty data source over a weekend produces a bill much larger than your study budget. Connect one source, keep it small, set a cap.

  • Microsoft Learn free training

What a retake costs

A retake is another $165 at full price. Microsoft's timing rules are consistent across its exams: 24 hours before a second attempt, 14 days before the third and each attempt after that, and no more than five attempts on the same exam in twelve months.

The 24 hour window tempts people to rebook the same evening, and on this exam that is usually wrong. The score report breaks the result down by skill area, and a failed SC-200 is nearly always one area rather than a general shortfall.

If incident response scored low, that is 32 percent of the exam and the largest single domain. The gap is usually process rather than product: what you do with an incident in Defender XDR, in what order, and what each action actually changes. A trial tenant with real incidents to work through fixes it faster than rereading.

If threats or detections scored low, the answer is normally KQL. Queries are examinable and people underestimate them because the rest of the exam is portal work. A few evenings in the free demo environment writing queries by hand, rather than reading them, closes it.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

Role-based Microsoft certifications last one year and renew free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. The only cost is the hour it takes.

The assessment is open book, unproctored and retryable, and it covers what has changed rather than the whole exam. Nobody should be paying to recertify a Microsoft role-based credential.

The renewal window opens six months before expiry. Miss it and the certification lapses, and getting it back means sitting the full $165 exam again, so the practical advice is to set a calendar reminder on the day you pass.

One year is short, and that is the trade. The renewal is free and quick, but it is annual, so this is a credential that requires a small recurring act of attention rather than a large recurring fee.

Cycle length: 1 year. Free online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn each year.
