How hard is SC-200?

The short answer
Microsoft Security Operations Analyst is a mid-level exam. It assumes working familiarity with the field it covers, and candidates coming from adjacent roles usually need to close real gaps rather than review. Microsoft Azure classifies it at the intermediate level, and the format is multiple choice, drag-and-drop, hot area, and case studies, sat in 100 minutes.
With a year or two of hands-on exposure to the subject area, preparation is mostly structured review plus practice under time pressure. Coming in cold, plan for meaningfully more study time and lean on the objectives to find what you have never touched.
What actually makes it hard
Interactive items, not just multiple choice.
Multiple choice and multiple response, plus drag-and-drop ordering, hot area items where you click a region of a screenshot, and case studies that hold one scenario across several linked questions. These take longer than multiple-choice questions and punish rote memorization, because you have to do the task rather than recognize an answer.
Breadth across domains.
The blueprint spans 4 domains, and the heaviest, Manage incident response, is 32% of the exam. You cannot skip a domain and rely on the rest; the weighting reaches everything.
The clock.
40 to 60 questions in 100 minutes leaves little room to dwell. Time pressure is a skill of its own, and it is the one thing reading can never prepare you for. Timed practice can.

Where candidates struggle: Incident response and threat management are 60 percent between them. Practicing the investigation flow inside a real Defender tenant moves the score faster than reading product docs.
What to hold first
Microsoft Azure recommends coming to SC-200 with SCI Fundamentals level knowledge. That is a recommendation, not a gate; nothing stops you booking directly. It is honest guidance about the assumed baseline, and skipping it moves the missing material into your study plan rather than out of it.
