Certification guide
Core Certified Advanced Power UserSplunk Core Certified Advanced Power User: the honest guide
The Splunk Core Certified Advanced Power User is 70 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, at Pearson VUE for $130 an attempt, and the track page lists the Core Certified Power User as its prerequisite. Splunk rates it intermediate.
The blueprint has 22 areas with weights between 2 and 7 percent, split between advanced searching and reporting on one side and dashboards and forms on the other. Working with Multivalued Fields and Adding Drilldowns are 7 percent each; Manipulating and Filtering Data, Using Subsearches, Improving Performance and Customizing Dashboards are 6 percent each; Using Advanced Transactions, Using Forms and Adding Advanced Behaviors and Visualizations are 5 percent each.
The width is the difficulty. No single area is worth cramming, and a blank in any of the acceleration, search tuning or dashboard topics costs marks that the others cannot make up.
Who Core Certified Advanced Power User is for
A good fit if
- You hold the Power User and are the person on the team who writes the searches nobody else can, and you want the acceleration, tuning and multivalue material to be as solid as the rest.
- You build Splunk dashboards for other people and want forms, tokens, drilldowns and performance to be design decisions rather than trial and error.
- You are on the consultant path. Splunk's track page positions the Advanced Power User one step closer to the Core Certified Consultant, and the material is what consulting work looks like.
- You want your Power User renewed on the way to an admin exam. Passing the Advanced Power User keeps it current, and the handbook then lists both admin exams as the next level options.
Probably not, if
- You do not yet hold the Core Certified Power User. Splunk lists it as the prerequisite, so it has to come first.
- Your interest is administration or architecture rather than searching and dashboards. The admin exams list only the Power User as prerequisite and you can go there directly.
- You have never used summary indexing, report acceleration or data model acceleration. Those are three areas of the blueprint and are very hard to answer without having configured them.
Is Core Certified Advanced Power User worth it?
It is $130 with free preparation, it renews your Power User, and the handbook lists both admin exams as next level options that renew it in turn. As a step it costs little.
Whether the credential matters on its own depends on your work. The material is Splunk specific and dashboard heavy, so it pays where you build reports and dashboards for others and adds less where you mainly administer the platform.
The three year cycle with renewal only by exam is the same as every Splunk certification, so plan on either an admin exam or a retake within the window.
What the exam actually asks you to do
70 multiple choice questions and nothing else. Splunk sets no lab and no simulation on this exam, so the practice that matters is reading a scenario and choosing well under the clock.

Study plans by experience level
Power User holder who writes searches daily
5 to 7 weeksat 5 to 7 hours
- 1Print the 22 area blueprint and mark every area you have not configured yourself. For most people that is the acceleration options, summary indexing and the dashboard behaviors.
- 2On the free Splunk Enterprise license, set up a summary index, accelerate a report and a data model, and look at the tsidx files, so the acceleration questions are about something you did.
- 3Work through the free Statistical Processing, Comparing Values, Result Modification and Working with Time courses for the multivalue, eval and time areas, then Creating Classic Dashboards and Visualizations for forms, tokens and drilldowns.
- 4Finish with timed sets at 70 questions in 57 minutes and restudy whichever of the 22 areas keeps costing marks.
Dashboard builder with weaker search tuning
6 to 8 weeksat 5 to 7 hours
- 1Start with the searching half: subsearches, advanced transactions, multivalue fields, search efficiency and search tuning, which is where your gaps are and where about a third of the marks sit.
- 2Read the search job inspector on your own slow searches and rewrite them, since Using Search Efficiently, More Search Tuning and Improving Performance are 13 percent together.
- 3Move to the dashboard half, checking forms, drilldowns and advanced behaviors against the blueprint rather than your habits, because the exam asks about Simple XML behavior you may have worked around.
- 4Take timed practice sets and book when the flagged sections stop repeating.
Studying Advanced Power User and an admin exam together
10 to 14 weeksat 6 to 8 hours
- 1Buy the five registration voucher pack at $500 if you will sit two or more exams within the year the vouchers last.
- 2Do the Advanced Power User material first, since acceleration, summary indexing and search performance are also useful background for an admin blueprint.
- 3Sit the Advanced Power User, then move to the Enterprise Certified Admin or Cloud Certified Admin material without a break, because the admin pass renews everything below it.
- 4Keep both appointments more than 48 hours out to avoid a forfeited fee.
Common mistakes
- Cramming the biggest areas and ignoring the rest
- The largest area is 7 percent and the smallest is 2. Twenty two areas means that leaving five of them unstudied removes a fifth of the marks before you start.
- Reading about acceleration instead of configuring it
- Summary indexing, report acceleration, data model acceleration and tsidx files are 8 percent across two areas, and the questions turn on behavior that is obvious once you have accelerated something and watched what happened.
- Treating multivalue fields as an edge case
- Working with Multivalued Fields is 7 percent, the joint largest area. The mv command family and how stats treats multivalue fields deserve a full study session.
- Assuming your dashboard habits match Simple XML
- Forms, drilldowns, advanced behaviors and dashboard customization are nearly a quarter of the exam between them. If you build in Dashboard Studio, check what the blueprint means by forms and drilldowns before assuming.
- Pacing for 60 minutes when you have 57
- The exam time includes three minutes to accept the certification agreement, and 70 questions in the remaining time is under 50 seconds each. Read the agreement in advance and mark questions to revisit rather than lingering.
- Looking things up
- The exam is closed book and the handbook says any perceived violation is an automatic failure with the fee forfeited. The eval function names have to be memorized.
What comes after passing
The handbook lists the Cloud Certified Admin and Enterprise Certified Admin as the next level options for an Advanced Power User. Either one renews this certification and the Power User and User beneath it.
If administration is not your path, plan the Advanced Power User retake for the final year of the three year window, since that is the only other way to renew it.
Claim the Credly badge on a personal address and put the expiry date in your own calendar. The 90 day grace period is the only slack.
Costs across the full renewal cycle are on the Core Certified Advanced Power User cost page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the prerequisite?
The Splunk Core Certified Power User. The track page lists it as the prerequisite, so it comes first.
How is the exam weighted?
Across 22 areas with weights from 2 to 7 percent. Working with Multivalued Fields and Adding Drilldowns are the largest at 7 percent each, and the rest of the blueprint is split between advanced searching and reporting and dashboards and forms.
Is there a passing score?
Splunk does not publish one. You see pass or fail on submission, and if you fail, section level feedback appears in your Pearson VUE account without a question by question breakdown.
Does passing renew my Power User?
Yes. The handbook's downstream table shows the Advanced Power User renewing the Core Power User and the Core User, and all three get a new expiry date three years from the Advanced Power User pass.
How do I renew the Advanced Power User itself?
Pass the Cloud Certified Admin or Enterprise Certified Admin exam within the three year window, or retake the Advanced Power User exam in the final year. There is a 90 day grace period and Splunk gives no extensions.
