Do not buy a course to learn the architecture. Security Data Management at 20 percent, Scaling Defenses and DevSecOps at 15 and Capability Selection, Placement and Configuration at 15 are judged from experience, and the free product courses cover the Splunk specific parts.
Read the blueprint against your own program. Governance, Risk and Compliance and Measuring and Improving Security Program Effectiveness are 25 percent together, and the documents your organization already keeps are the study material.
Buy the five registration pack at $500 if you hold or plan the Analyst and Engineer exams too, since none of the three renews another and all three will need retakes within their own windows.
Employer held Splunk Education training units convert to vouchers at 13 units each.

Splunk points at a Pearson VUE voucher store selling five exams for $500, which is $100 an exam rather than $130.

What a retake costs
A retake is $130 after seven days, then 14 days after a second failure, 28 before a fourth attempt and 56 before the fifth and sixth.
Pass or fail appears on submission and a failing candidate gets section feedback in the Pearson VUE account across the eight blueprint areas.
Closed book is enforced and the handbook treats any reference material as an automatic failure with the fee forfeited.
Sixty seven questions in 75 minutes, less the three minute agreement timer, is about a minute a question, and expert level scenario questions take longer to read than admin questions do.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
Three years from the exam date. The handbook lists no next level option for the Cybersecurity Defense Architect, so renewal is a $130 retake in the final year of the window.
It renews nothing beneath it. The handbook's downstream table shows none for the three Cybersecurity Defense certifications, so an Analyst or Engineer you also hold keeps its own date.
A pass earlier than the final year does not count, the grace period is 90 days and there are no extensions.
Splunk reminds you at 180, 90 and 30 days and Credly at 60. A lapse past the grace period sets the certification inactive and you restart.
Cycle length: 3 years. All Splunk certifications run a three year life cycle from the date of the highest certification exam passed. Splunk stopped renewing certifications through coursework on 1 March 2026, so renewal now means either retaking the same exam in the final year of the window or earning a higher level certification in the same track. Splunk says a certification you let lapse is marked inactive, and that you then restart the program at the Splunk Core Certified Power User level.
