The Splunk Enterprise Certified Admin is 56 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, at Pearson VUE for $130 an attempt, with the Core Certified Power User as the prerequisite. Splunk rates it professional and says on the track page that it is for anyone responsible for the day to day administration and health of a Splunk Enterprise environment, and that it suits a deployment that will not be migrating to Splunk Cloud.
The blueprint is 17 areas. Splunk Indexes, Distributed Search and Forwarder Management carry 10 percent each, and the other 14, from admin basics and license management through configuration files, user and authentication management, the getting data in areas, monitor, network, scripted and agentless inputs, fine tuning, parsing and manipulating raw data, carry 5 percent each.
Getting data in, in its various forms, is the exam. The five input areas, staging, forwarder configuration and management, parsing and raw data manipulation add up to 55 percent of the marks.
Who Enterprise Certified Admin is for
A good fit if
- You run a Splunk Enterprise deployment on your own servers and want the indexes, inputs, forwarders and parsing settings you configure to be understood rather than copied.
- You are a Core Power User moving from searching into platform work, which is the step Splunk's track page describes as the ideal next one.
- You administer Splunk Enterprise Security and need the underlying platform administration solid. Splunk calls this a key stepping stone to administering an ES environment.
- You are heading for the Enterprise Certified Architect, which lists this certification as a prerequisite alongside the Power User and the coursework.
Probably not, if
- Your environment is Splunk Cloud Platform or is migrating to it. The Cloud Certified Admin covers the same data ingestion with the Cloud specific constraints, and Splunk's own track page steers migrating deployments away from this exam.
- You do not hold the Core Certified Power User. It is the listed prerequisite and has to come first.
- You have never installed a forwarder or edited props and transforms. The exam assumes that work, and reading about it is a poor substitute.
Is Enterprise Certified Admin worth it?
For a Splunk Enterprise administrator it is $130 with free preparation, it is the credential Splunk names for the role, and it is the gate to the Architect. There is not much to weigh.
Its value is tied to on premises Splunk Enterprise. If your organization is on its way to Splunk Cloud, the Cloud Admin describes your future work better and renews the same certifications beneath it.
Renewal is by the Architect exam or a retake, on a three year cycle. The Architect route needs four Splunk Education courses with no published price, so for most people the renewal is a $130 retake.
What the exam actually asks you to do
56 multiple choice questions and nothing else. Splunk sets no lab and no simulation on this exam, so the practice that matters is reading a scenario and choosing well under the clock.

- 3Learn the configuration files by reading btool output for your own instance, since the exam asks what setting lives where and which one wins.
- 4Finish with timed practice sets and a written summary of the data pipeline from input to index, including where props and transforms act.

Common mistakes
- Studying the search side
- The Power User covered searching. This blueprint is administration, and the five input areas plus staging, forwarders, parsing and raw data manipulation are 55 percent of the marks. Time spent on SPL here is time taken from the exam.
- Not knowing which configuration file wins
- Configuration files are a named 5 percent area but the precedence rules run through indexes, inputs and parsing questions too. Run btool on your own instance until the layering is second nature.
- Skipping the input types you never use
- Monitor inputs, network and scripted inputs, agentless inputs and fine tuning inputs are four separate areas at 5 percent each. A deployment that only uses monitor inputs leaves 15 percent of the exam unstudied.
- Forgetting parsing happens before indexing
- Parsing Phase and Data and Manipulating Raw Data are 10 percent together and turn on where in the pipeline a setting acts. Trace one event from forwarder to index and write down each stage.
- Opening the documentation
- The exam is closed book and the handbook names Splunk Docs as prohibited. Any perceived violation is an automatic failure with the fee forfeited, and configuration settings are exactly what people are tempted to check.
What comes after passing
The Enterprise Certified Architect is the handbook's next level option and lists this certification, the Power User and four Splunk Education courses as prerequisites. If your employer will fund the courses, it renews everything beneath it.
If the Architect is not funded, plan the $130 retake for the final year of the three year window, since the handbook lists no other renewal route for the Admin.
