Cost breakdownAZ-900

How much does Microsoft Azure Fundamentals cost?

AZ-900 is the cheapest meaningful certification most people will take: $99 for the exam, and genuinely $0 for everything else. Microsoft publishes the complete study path free on Microsoft Learn, and the Azure free account gives you somewhere to click through what you read about.

Realistic total

$99 to $250

The low figure is the exam with Microsoft Learn only. The high figure adds a paid course and one retake.

Ways to bring the cost down

There is very little to reduce here, which is the point. The exam is $99 and the official material is free. Anyone charging you several hundred dollars to prepare for AZ-900 is selling a repackaging of Microsoft Learn.

If you are a verified student at an accredited institution, Microsoft offers a reduced student rate on exams, which brings the only real cost down further.

Microsoft also runs periodic free exam offers tied to virtual training days: attend the session, receive a voucher. These come and go, they are announced on the Microsoft events site, and for a $99 exam they can take the entire cost to zero.

  • Microsoft Learn free training

Every Microsoft exam has a complete free study path on Microsoft Learn, written by the same team that writes the skills outline. This is the single biggest cost reduction available on these exams.

  • Free renewal

Role-based Microsoft certifications renew for free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the renewal cost is your time only.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $99. Microsoft's retake policy is stricter than CompTIA's on timing: after a failed attempt you must wait 24 hours before the second, then 14 days before the third and fourth, and there is a cap of five attempts in twelve months.

The 24 hour wait is short enough that people rebook immediately, which is usually wrong for the same reason it is wrong on Security+. AZ-900 failures cluster in the pricing and support domain, which is memorisation rather than understanding, and one more day does not fix it.

Microsoft's exam score report gives you a bar per skills area. Use it: it tells you exactly which section of the Learn path to redo.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

This is the best part of the AZ-900 economics: fundamentals certifications do not expire. There is no renewal, no continuing education requirement, and no annual fee. You pay $99 once.

That is unusual and it is specific to the fundamentals level. Microsoft's role-based certifications such as AZ-104 expire after one year and renew free through an online assessment. If you go on to a role-based cert, budget the annual hour rather than an annual fee.

Compared with a CompTIA certification, where three years of CEUs and fees are the norm, the total cost of ownership on AZ-900 is close to zero after the exam.

Typical preparation budget

Preparation for Azure Fundamentals can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $150, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.

Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
