Azure Fundamentals vs Azure Administrator

Which one to take first
If you have used any cloud before, go straight to AZ-104. AZ-900 is not a prerequisite, it teaches vocabulary you will pick up in the first week of AZ-104 study, and it appears in almost no job postings.
If cloud is entirely new, AZ-900 is worth the $99. Not for the certificate, but because AZ-104 assumes a mental model of regions, resource groups and subscriptions that is expensive to build while also learning networking.
AZ-900 is also the right answer for people who need to speak about Azure without administering it: account managers, project leads, and anyone in a role adjacent to a cloud team.
When the answer is the other one
Take AZ-104 instead if you already administer anything
Windows Server, VMware, or another cloud all give you the model AZ-900 exists to teach. Spending two weeks and $99 to be told what a virtual machine is delays the certification that changes what you are hired for.
Take AZ-900 instead if you are not going to do lab work
AZ-104 is not passable from reading. If you cannot commit to building things in a real subscription for two months, AZ-900 is an honest credential you will actually earn, and AZ-104 is $165 spent on a fail.
Take AWS Cloud Practitioner instead if the job market decides
The two fundamentals exams are equivalent in difficulty and value. Which one to hold is decided by which cloud the employers near you run, and that is worth ten minutes on a job board before spending anything.
