Certification guide
DP-700Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate: the honest guide
DP-700 is the Fabric data engineering exam, and it is a working exam rather than a conceptual one: the study guide expects you to be skilled at manipulating and transforming data with SQL, PySpark and KQL, and the questions move between the three without announcing which one they want.
The three skill areas are the same size, 30 to 35 percent each: implementing and managing an analytics solution, ingesting and transforming data, and monitoring and optimizing it. There is no dominant domain, and the third one is the one most candidates have practiced least.
Who DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer is for
A good fit if
- You build pipelines, notebooks or warehouses in Fabric already and want the credential that matches the job.
- You are a data engineer on another platform and your organization is moving analytics onto Fabric and OneLake.
- You hold a Power BI or analytics background and are moving toward the engineering side of the same platform.
- You need a current Microsoft data credential and DP-203 is no longer the one to hold.
Probably not, if
- You want to learn SQL or Python. The exam assumes you can already read and write both, plus KQL, and it tests the platform rather than the languages.
- Your work is reporting and semantic models. That is the analytics engineer's ground, and DP-600 is the exam written for it.
- You are new to data platforms altogether. Start with DP-900, which teaches the vocabulary this exam takes for granted.
Is DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer worth it?
For a data engineer whose organization is standardizing on Fabric, yes. The curriculum is close to the real job: choosing between a dataflow, a pipeline and a notebook, designing incremental loads, handling late-arriving data, and knowing where a failed run is diagnosed.
It is also cheap to prepare for. The Fabric trial capacity gives you 60 days of the whole product with no Azure subscription, so the exam fee is close to the entire cost for anyone who times the trial well.
It is a weaker purchase for someone with no engineering background who wants a foothold in data. The exam's three-language assumption is real, and the certification will not substitute for being able to write the transformations it asks about.
What the exam actually asks you to do

Domain breakdown
Monitor and optimize an analytics solution is the heaviest domain at 34 percent, followed by Implement and manage an analytics solution at 33 percent.
Each of the three skill areas is published as a 30 to 35 percent range; weights here use 33/33/34 (near the midpoint) so they sum to 100.
- Implement and manage an analytics solution33%
- Ingest and transform data33%
- Monitor and optimize an analytics solution34%
Where to focus: The three skill areas are weighted almost equally (30 to 35 percent each), so plan roughly a third of your study time on implementing and managing, a third on ingesting data, and a third on monitoring and optimizing.
Study plans by experience level
Working Fabric data engineer
4 to 5 weeksat 6 hours
- 1Week 1: read the study guide and mark every line you have not done by hand in the last three months. For most working engineers that list is dominated by workspace settings, lifecycle management and security, not by ingestion.
- 2Weeks 2 to 3: the marked items, in the trial capacity. Deployment pipelines, version control, item and row-level access controls, sensitivity labels and OneLake security are cheap to configure once and reliably asked about.
- 3Week 4: monitoring and optimization. Deliberately break a pipeline, a notebook and an Eventstream and read what each surface tells you, then optimize a Delta table and a warehouse query.
- 4Week 5: the free practice assessment twice, and a full-length timed form.
Data engineer from another platform
8 to 10 weeksat 8 hours
- 1Weeks 1 to 2: the Fabric shape. Workspaces, capacities, OneLake, and what a lakehouse, a warehouse and an Eventhouse each are for. Start the 60 day trial on day one of this fortnight, not before.
- 2Weeks 3 to 5: ingestion and transformation. Shortcuts, mirroring, pipelines, Dataflows Gen2 and notebooks, with a deliberate exercise on when to choose which, because that choice is what the questions test.
- 3Weeks 6 to 7: streaming. Eventstreams, Spark structured streaming, KQL and windowing functions are the part with the least overlap with other platforms and the part self-taught candidates most often skip.
- 4Weeks 8 to 9: security, governance, lifecycle management and then monitoring and optimization, each of which is a third of a skill area.
- 5Week 10: the practice assessment and a timed full-length form.
Analyst moving into engineering
12 weeksat 8 hours
- 1Weeks 1 to 3: the languages. PySpark and KQL to a reading level, and SQL to the level of writing an incremental merge. The exam does not teach them and neither does the Learn path.
- 2Weeks 4 to 6: lakehouse and warehouse loading patterns, full and incremental loads, dimensional model preparation and the handling of duplicate, missing and late data.
- 3Weeks 7 to 8: orchestration and the choice between a dataflow, a pipeline and a notebook, then streaming with Eventstreams and KQL.
- 4Weeks 9 to 10: workspace configuration, security and lifecycle management.
- 5Weeks 11 to 12: monitoring and optimization, then the practice assessment and a timed full-length form.
Common mistakes
- Studying the batch third and skipping the streaming
- Streaming is a named objective group inside a 30 to 35 percent skill area, and it is the part with the least carry-over from other platforms. Eventstreams, Spark structured streaming, KQL and windowing functions need to be practiced, not read about.
- Knowing one language well and the other two badly
- The study guide names SQL, PySpark and KQL together, and the questions switch between them. A candidate who can write the transformation in one language but cannot read it in the other two will lose questions they understand the concept of.
- Leaving monitoring and optimization to the last week
- It is a full third of the exam and the part you meet least while building. Error identification across pipelines, dataflows, notebooks, Eventhouses, Eventstreams, T-SQL and shortcuts is a list of surfaces to have looked at, and each one takes an evening.
- Starting the trial before the study plan
- The Fabric trial lasts 60 days from activation. A trial started out of curiosity and left idle is the most common way a free exam turns into one with a capacity bill attached.
- Treating the tool choice questions as trivia
- Whether to use a Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline, a notebook, KQL or T-SQL for a described transformation is asked repeatedly, and the answer depends on volume, skill of the team and where the data lands. It is the most predictable question type on the exam and the most rewarding to prepare for deliberately.
What comes after passing
The certification is valid for one year and renews free through the unproctored assessment on Microsoft Learn, with the window opening six months before expiry.
The renewal assessment tracks the current study guide, which matters on a product that ships features monthly and revised its skills measured in July 2026.
Natural next steps are sideways: DP-600 if the semantic model and reporting side of the same platform is becoming your job, or the Azure data and AI tracks if pipelines outside Fabric are.
The durable part is the loading pattern discipline. Knowing how to design an incremental load, prepare data for a dimensional model and handle late-arriving records is the skill that survives every product rename.
Costs across the full renewal cycle are on the DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer cost page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know PySpark and KQL for DP-700?
Yes. The study guide says candidates should be skilled at manipulating and transforming data with SQL, PySpark and KQL, and the transformation and streaming objectives name all three. Reading fluency in all of them and writing fluency in at least one is the realistic bar.
Can I practice for free?
Mostly. The Fabric trial capacity gives 60 days of every workload with up to 1 TB in OneLake and needs no Azure subscription, only a Fabric (Free) per-user license in a tenant that allows trials. The Learn path and the practice assessment are free. The only likely cost beyond the $165 exam is a paid capacity if the trial runs out first.
How is DP-700 different from DP-600?
DP-700 is the data engineering exam: ingestion, transformation, orchestration, security and monitoring of the analytics solution. DP-600 is the analytics engineering exam, centered on semantic models and the reporting layer on the same platform. Many people hold both; the engineering one is the harder of the two for someone from a reporting background.
How long is the certification valid?
One year, renewed free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn that opens six months before expiry. If it lapses there is no renewal route, and recovery means paying $165 and sitting the full proctored exam again.
Does the exam have a passing score and how many questions?
A score of 700 or greater on a 1 to 1000 scale passes. Microsoft lists the exam at 40 to 60 questions in 100 minutes, and the question types include multiple choice, multiple response, drag and drop, hot area and case studies.
