PCAProfessional Cloud Architect: the honest guide
Professional Cloud Architect is Google's flagship design certification, and it is unusual in one important way: part of the exam is written against case studies that the exam guide publishes in advance. Reading them is preparation you can do before you know anything else.
As of 25 August 2026 the guide links four: Cymbal Retail, Alto Strat Media, EHR Healthcare and Knight Motives Automotive. Older third-party material still names a previous set, which is a quick way to check whether a course is current before you pay for it.
Who Cloud Architect is for
A good fit if
- You design solutions on Google Cloud and want the credential that matches.
- You are an architect on another platform whose organization is adopting Google Cloud.
- You work in consulting or pre-sales and defend designs to people who will pay for them.
- Your organization needs certified architects for a Google Cloud partner requirement.
Probably not, if
- You are early in your cloud career. This exam expects you to weigh business requirements against technical ones, which is a skill built by doing rather than by studying.
- You want a configuration credential. Associate Cloud Engineer and the engineering professionals test what you can build; this one tests what you would choose.
- You want a certification that stays current for years. Professional certifications run two years, and the case studies themselves change between guide versions.
Is Cloud Architect worth it?
It is the most widely recognized Google Cloud certification and the one hiring managers name most often, which matters more than it should but does matter. The case study format is also genuinely good practice for the job: reading a business context for constraints before designing is the work.
Preparation is cheap for a certification with this reputation. The case studies, the exam guide, the Well-Architected Framework and the reference architectures are free, and there is comparatively little to build.
It is not the best exam for a hands-on engineer who wants to prove implementation skill. The design framing rewards judgement, and a candidate who has only implemented other people's designs will find the questions ambiguous rather than hard.

From the official Google Cloud exam guides. Designing and planning a cloud solution architecture is the heaviest domain at 25 percent, followed by Managing and provisioning a cloud solution infrastructure at 17.5 percent.

Where to focus: Designing and planning is a quarter of the exam on its own, and adding the two process sections takes requirements work to 40 percent. The case studies are published before the exam and are the cheapest marks available, because everyone else is reading them for the first time under the clock.

Architect on Google Cloud
6 to 8 weeksat 6 hours
- 1Week 1: read all four case studies and write down each company's three binding constraints before touching any other material.
- 2Weeks 2 to 4: the design and planning section at 25 percent, against the Well-Architected Framework rather than against product documentation.
- 3Weeks 5 to 6: security, compliance and the process analysis sections, which are where architects with an infrastructure background are usually thinnest.
- 4Weeks 7 to 8: operations excellence and reliability, then re-read the case studies and answer practice questions against them.
Architect from AWS or Azure
10 to 12 weeksat 8 hours
- 1Weeks 1 to 2: Google's resource hierarchy, networking model and IAM, which are the three places an experienced architect's assumptions break.
- 2Weeks 3 to 5: the service equivalents, honestly rather than by analogy, since several map imperfectly.
- 3Weeks 6 to 8: the case studies, each one designed end to end and written up.
- 4Weeks 9 to 12: the Well-Architected Framework, reference architectures and a full pass through the exam guide.
Engineer moving into architecture
12 to 16 weeksat 8 hours
- 1Weeks 1 to 4: breadth first. Compute, storage, networking, data and operations at the level of what each is for, because architecture questions span all of them.
- 2Weeks 5 to 8: the case studies, with a written design for each and an explicit note of what you traded away.
- 3Weeks 9 to 12: business process analysis and cost, the two areas engineers most reliably underrate.
- 4Weeks 13 to 16: the framework, the reference architectures, and practice at choosing between two defensible answers.
Common mistakes
- Using out-of-date case studies
- The guide's case studies change between versions, and a large amount of third-party preparation still names an earlier set. Studying the wrong companies wastes the single most targetable part of the exam, and checking is free: open the current exam guide and read what it links.
- Designing the best architecture rather than the right one
- Case study questions are marked against the fictional company's stated constraints: its budget, its compliance obligation, its existing estate and its appetite for change. A technically superior design that ignores one of those is the classic wrong answer.
- Skipping the business process sections
- Analyzing technical and business processes is 15 percent and managing implementation another 12.5 percent, which together outweigh any single technical section. Engineers preparing alone concentrate on infrastructure and leave a quarter of the exam thinly covered.
- Expecting a diagnostic failure
- Google publishes no passing score and no section breakdown, so a failed attempt returns nothing you can plan from. With a 14-day wait before a second attempt and 60 before a third, that makes systematic preparation cheaper than an exploratory sitting.
What comes after passing
Valid for two years, with the renewal window opening 60 days before expiry. The case studies will probably have changed by then, which makes renewal genuine preparation.
Google issues a discount code after a pass that applies to a renewal attempt.
The usual neighbours are the security and network engineer certifications if you want depth, or an architecture certification on a second platform if your organization is multi-cloud.
The durable skill is constraint-first design: reading a business context for its obligations and limits before reaching for a service. That is what the case study format teaches, and it outlives the certification.

No, there is no prerequisite. The associate exam is a reasonable route in for somebody new to Google Cloud, because this exam assumes you already know what the services do and asks only which one belongs in a design.
Is it harder than the AWS Solutions Architect Professional exam?
They are hard in different ways. The AWS professional exam is longer and denser in service detail; this one is shorter and more ambiguous, because case study questions turn on business constraints rather than on technical correctness. Candidates who like a provable right answer usually find this the more uncomfortable format.
