How much does CompTIA Network+ cost?

The voucher is the cost, so the saving is in not buying anything around it. Professor Messer's complete Network+ course is free, CompTIA's objectives are free, and Packet Tracer, GNS3 and Wireshark are free. A self-study pass is $369 and nothing else.

Three discounts are real and worth checking before you buy. CompTIA sells academic vouchers at a reduced rate to students and staff at participating institutions through its academic store. CompTIA exams are covered under the DoD COOL programs and are eligible for GI Bill reimbursement, which pays the fee back rather than cutting it. And most IT employers reimburse an exam that maps to your role, so ask before booking rather than after.

Buy the voucher on its own. CompTIA bundles vouchers with CertMaster training at a considerably higher price, and the bundle is only worth it if you would have bought the training anyway. Nothing in the bundle is required to pass.

The performance-based questions are the reason people buy labs, and they do not need to. PBQs on this exam are subnetting, cable and connector identification, and reading a configuration or a log. A simulator and a subnetting worksheet cover all three at no cost.

A retake is another $369 at full price, and CompTIA's retake policy is the same across its exams: no waiting period before a second attempt, then 14 calendar days before the third and each attempt after it. There is no cap on total attempts, but every one costs the full fee.

Because there is no wait before the second attempt, people rebook immediately. That is usually wrong here. Network+ reports a score out of 900 with a 720 pass mark and breaks the result down by domain, and a failure is almost always concentrated rather than general.

If troubleshooting scored low, the problem is method rather than knowledge. That domain is 24 percent of the exam, the largest, and it rewards working a fault in order rather than recognising it. Practising the same methodology out loud on a broken simulated topology is worth more than rereading.

If networking concepts scored low, it is usually ports, protocols and the OSI layer each one sits at. That is memorisation, it is finite, and a fortnight of daily recall closes it. Two attempts at $738 is a bad way to learn a table you could have written out.

Network+ lasts three years. Renewal is either 30 continuing education units across the cycle plus CompTIA's continuing education fee, or passing the current version of the exam again at full price.

The CE route is much cheaper and most people take it. CEUs come from work activities, training, higher certifications and conference attendance, so if you are working in networking you are generating them anyway. The cost is the CE fee rather than another $369.

The route worth knowing about is that a higher CompTIA certification renews the ones below it. Passing Security+ renews Network+ and A+ for a further three years, which means someone working the standard sequence rarely pays a renewal fee at all.

If you leave networking entirely, letting it lapse is a defensible choice. An expired certification still shows on a CV with its dates, and paying to renew a credential you no longer use is money spent on a line item nobody asks about.

Preparation for Network+ can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $350, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
