Ways to bring the cost down

Skip the Core User exam if the Power User is your goal. Splunk lists no prerequisite for the Power User exam, and passing it renews a Core User certification you already hold, so the User exam is a separate $130 you do not need to spend.

Work through the free knowledge object courses before buying anything. Ten of the blueprint's domains are about creating and managing fields, aliases, tags, event types, macros, workflow actions, data models and the CIM add-on, and each has a free Splunk course.

Use the free Splunk Enterprise license for practice. The Common Information Model add-on installs on it and you can normalize your own test data against it, which is the part of the blueprint people find hardest to study from a book.

Five registrations for $500 through the Pearson VUE voucher store is cheaper per attempt than single bookings if you plan to continue to the Advanced Power User or an admin exam within the year the vouchers stay valid.

Employers with Splunk Education training units can convert 13 units into a voucher and 50 into five, so check whether one already exists before paying.

For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.

What a retake costs

A retake is another $130. The handbook's wait ladder is seven days after the first failure, 14 days after the second, 28 days before a fourth attempt and 56 days before a fifth or sixth, with anything beyond six attempts considered case by case.

Pass or fail is shown immediately. A failing candidate gets section level feedback in the Pearson VUE account and nothing more granular, so treat the flagged sections as your retake syllabus.

Closed book is enforced by the proctor and the handbook calls out Splunk Docs and Splunk Answers specifically. Any perceived violation is an automatic failure with the fee forfeited.

The 60 minutes for 65 questions includes three minutes to accept the certification agreement at the start, and the session ends if the timer runs out before you accept, so open the agreement from the track page beforehand.

What renewal costs across the full cycle

The three year cycle starts on the date of your highest Splunk exam. The handbook lists three next level options for a Power User: the Core Certified Advanced Power User, the Enterprise Certified Admin and the Cloud Certified Admin, and passing any of them renews the Power User for three more years.

Or retake the Power User exam in the final year of the window. A pass outside that final year does not count towards renewal, and both routes cost a $130 attempt.

Renewal reaches downward. Passing the Power User exam also updates a Core User badge you already hold, though the handbook is clear that it does not issue a User badge to anyone who started at Power User.

There is a 90 day grace period and no extensions. After it the certification goes inactive and you restart the program, so the calendar entry is worth more than any other renewal advice.

Cycle length: 3 years. All Splunk certifications run a three year life cycle from the date of the highest certification exam passed. Splunk stopped renewing certifications through coursework on 1 March 2026, so renewal now means either retaking the same exam in the final year of the window or earning a higher level certification in the same track. Splunk says a certification you let lapse is marked inactive, and that you then restart the program at the Splunk Core Certified Power User level.
