Splunk Enterprise Certified Architect is an advanced exam. It is written for experienced practitioners, and the questions assume judgment built from real work rather than memorized definitions.
With several years in the field, the difficulty is breadth: domains you have read about but never worked in. Without that experience, read the objectives list domain by domain before booking. It is the honest measure of how much of this is new to you.
What actually makes it hard
Recognition is not understanding.
The format is 85 multiple choice questions, delivered by Pearson VUE at a test center or with an online proctor. The wrong options are written to look right to someone who learned the terms without the concept behind them.
Breadth across domains.
The blueprint spans 20 domains and the exam samples all of them. The heaviest, Infrastructure Planning: Resource Planning, is 7 percent of the exam; the lightest, Introduction, 2 percent.
The clock.
85 questions in 90 minutes is about 1.1 minutes each, including the time to read the stem and the options. Reading about the exam does not rehearse that pace; a full-length sitting against the clock does.

Where candidates struggle: Six troubleshooting sections, from Splunk Troubleshooting Methods through to Deployment Problems, are 30% of the paper between them. Resource Planning and Indexer Cluster Management are the heaviest single sections at 7% each.
What to hold first
Splunk recommends coming to Enterprise Certified Architect with Core Certified Power User and Enterprise Certified Admin level knowledge. That is a recommendation, not a gate: nothing stops you booking directly. Skipping it does not remove the assumed material; it moves it into your study plan.
