Splunk Enterprise Certified Architect: the honest guide

The Splunk Enterprise Certified Architect is 85 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes, closed book, at Pearson VUE for $130 an attempt. Splunk rates it expert. The track page lists two prerequisite certifications, the Core Certified Power User and the Enterprise Certified Admin, and four prerequisite courses: Architecting Splunk Enterprise Deployments, Troubleshooting Splunk Enterprise, Splunk Cluster Administration and Splunk Enterprise Deployment Practical Lab.

The blueprint is 20 areas that follow the courses. Infrastructure Planning: Resource Planning and Indexer Cluster Management and Administration are 7 percent each, Forwarder and Deployment Best Practices is 6 percent, KV Store Collection and Lookup Management is 3 percent, Introduction is 2 percent, and the other 15 areas, across project requirements, index design, clustering, performance monitoring, troubleshooting methods and problem types, single site and multisite indexer clusters and search head clusters, are 5 percent each.

It is the longest exam in the Splunk program and the only one with required coursework. Splunk does not publish the course prices on the track page, so the exam fee is the smallest cost on the page.

Who Enterprise Certified Architect is for

A good fit if

  • You design or run clustered Splunk Enterprise deployments and are already an Enterprise Certified Admin. Splunk's track page describes architects as people with expert knowledge of the platform, and the blueprint reads like the job.
  • Your employer will fund the four required courses. Without that, the certification is out of reach whatever your experience.
  • You are on the consultant path. The handbook lists the Core Certified Consultant as the next level option above the Architect.
  • You want one exam that renews everything. Passing the Architect renews the Enterprise Admin, Advanced Power User, Power User and User beneath it.

Probably not, if

  • You have not passed the Enterprise Certified Admin, or your organization will not pay for the coursework. Both are listed prerequisites.
  • Your environment is Splunk Cloud Platform. The clustering, sizing and troubleshooting on this blueprint is the work Splunk does for you in Cloud, and the Cloud Admin is the matching credential.
  • You have never run an indexer cluster or a search head cluster. Seven of the 20 areas are clustering and the questions assume hands on time.

Is Enterprise Certified Architect worth it?

If the courses are funded, the exam is $130 and the credential is the one Splunk names for architects. The four courses are the real investment and Splunk does not publish their price on the track page, so get that number from Splunk Education or your reseller before deciding.

It renews every Splunk Enterprise certification beneath it in one pass, on a three year cycle, and the Consultant is the next level option above it.

If the coursework is not funded, the Enterprise Admin with a $130 retake every three years is the practical ceiling, and the clustering knowledge is still worth learning on a home lab.

What the exam actually asks you to do

85 multiple choice questions and nothing else. Splunk sets no lab and no simulation on this exam, so the practice that matters is reading a scenario and choosing well under the clock.

  1. 1Take the four required courses in the order the track page lists them, Architecting, Troubleshooting, Cluster Administration and the Practical Lab, and keep your own notes because the exam is closed book and course documentation is prohibited in the room.
  2. 2Between courses, rebuild what each one taught on your own cluster lab: a single site indexer cluster, a multisite one, a search head cluster and a deployment server, using free licenses in containers or virtual machines.
  3. 3Practice the troubleshooting areas by breaking your lab deliberately, licensing, crashes, configuration, search and deployment problems, and working each one back from the logs.
  4. 4Take timed practice sets at 85 questions in 87 minutes in the final two weeks and rebalance study across the 20 areas by what they flag.

Enterprise Admin without cluster experience

  1. 1Before the courses, build a home cluster lab on free Splunk Enterprise licenses and get an indexer cluster and a search head cluster running, so the course time goes on design rather than setup.
  2. 2Take the four required courses and repeat every exercise on your own lab afterwards.
  3. 3Spend a fortnight on the planning areas, project requirements, index design and resource planning, which are 17 percent between them and are not lab exercises.
  4. 4Finish with timed practice sets and a written troubleshooting checklist for each of the five problem types on the blueprint.

  1. 1Take the required courses and treat the Practical Lab as the exam rehearsal, since it is the graded part of the coursework.
  2. 2Work the planning and best practice areas against real customer scenarios you have seen, writing a sizing and index design for each.
  3. 3Run performance monitoring and tuning on your own lab under load, because the monitoring console questions are easier once you have watched a cluster struggle.
  4. 4Take timed practice sets and book more than 48 hours out.

Common mistakes

Treating the courses as the whole preparation
The blueprint follows the courses, but the exam is closed book and the handbook prohibits course documentation in the room. Everything the course taught has to be reproduced from memory, which means rebuilding it on your own lab.
Skipping the planning areas because they are not hands on
Project Requirements, Index Design and Resource Planning are 17 percent together and Forwarder and Deployment Best Practices another 6. Sizing questions are as common as configuration ones.
Knowing single site clustering only
Multisite Indexer Cluster is its own 5 percent area and Indexer Cluster Management and Administration is 7. Site replication and search factors, site failover and multisite bucket behavior need a lab with more than one site.
Under studying troubleshooting
Methods and tools, clarifying the problem, and the licensing and crash, configuration, search and deployment problem areas are 30 percent of the exam. Break your lab on purpose and work each problem back.
Pacing like the admin exam
Eighty five questions in 90 minutes, less the three minute agreement timer, is about a minute each and the scenarios are longer. Flag and move on, then use the final review the platform provides.
Missing the appointment
Inside the 48 hour window the $130 is forfeited, and with the coursework behind you the cost of a delay is measured in the weeks the material stays fresh.

What comes after passing

Every Splunk Enterprise certification beneath the Architect now carries the new date. The handbook's downstream table lists the Enterprise Admin, Advanced Power User, Power User and User, with badges updated only where already held.

The next level option is the Splunk Core Certified Consultant, which we do not cover. Passing it within three years renews the Architect; otherwise plan the $130 retake for the final year of the window.

Claim the Credly badge on a personal email address and note the expiry date. There is a 90 day grace period and no extensions.

What are the prerequisites?

The Core Certified Power User and the Enterprise Certified Admin, plus four Splunk Education courses: Architecting Splunk Enterprise Deployments, Troubleshooting Splunk Enterprise, Splunk Cluster Administration and Splunk Enterprise Deployment Practical Lab. All are listed on the track page.

How much do the courses cost?

Splunk does not publish the course prices on the certification track page, and we do not quote a number we cannot source. Ask Splunk Education or your reseller, and ask whether your employer holds training units, which the handbook says also convert to exam vouchers.

Is there a passing score?

Splunk does not publish one. Pass or fail appears on submission, and a failing candidate gets section feedback in the Pearson VUE account without a question by question breakdown.

How do I renew it?

Pass the Splunk Core Certified Consultant exam within the three year window, or retake the Architect exam in the final year. Either renews the Architect and the certifications beneath it. There is a 90 day grace period and no extensions.

Can I use my course materials during the exam?

No. The handbook names course documentation alongside Splunk Docs and Splunk Answers as prohibited, and a perceived violation is an automatic failure with the fee forfeited.
