Cost breakdown
TA-003How much does HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate cost?
The Terraform Associate exam is $70, and that is close to the whole story. HashiCorp publishes the study guide, an exam review, and sample questions free, and a cloud free tier account covers the hands-on practice as long as you destroy what you build. This is the cheapest certification on this site. Budget $70 if you use the free material, and $140 at the outside if you want a cheap course or a retake reserve.
Cost breakdown
| Item | Cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Exam voucher | $70 | The published US list price for one attempt at TA-003. |
| Retake | $70 | A second attempt costs the same as the first. |
| HashiCorp tutorials | $0 | The official study guide and every tutorial it links to are free. |
| Cloud account for practice | Varies | You need somewhere to apply plans. Free tiers cover it if you destroy what you build. |
| HashiCorp study guide and tutorials | $0 | The official study guide, exam review, and hands-on tutorials are free and written by the vendor. They cover the full objective list for TA-003. |
| Official sample questions | $0 | Free from HashiCorp. Worth doing early, because the fill in the blank format surprises people who have only seen multiple choice exams. |
| Paid course | $10 to $50 | Optional. Video courses for this exam go on sale constantly. The free official material covers the same ground, so pay only if you prefer being talked through it. |

Ways to bring the cost down
There is not much cost to reduce, which is the point of this certification. The exam is $70 and the official material is free. Anyone charging real money for Terraform Associate prep is repackaging documentation HashiCorp gives away.
The one place money leaks is your practice cloud account. Terraform makes it easy to create infrastructure and easy to forget it. End every practice session with terraform destroy, confirm the state file is empty, and set a billing alarm on day one. The candidates who spend more than $70 on this certification usually spent the difference on an idle virtual machine.
The other saving is not failing. A retake is another $70, which doubles your exam cost on a certification where doubling still costs less than a single CompTIA voucher. Work the sample questions and the exam review until state operations feel routine, then book.
Free official study guide
HashiCorp publishes the full study guide, the exam review, and the sample questions at no cost. Buying a course is optional.
For a good share of candidates somebody else pays this fee. The GI Bill, DoD and employer routes, with the rules each one publishes.
What a retake costs
A retake costs the full $70. There is no discounted second attempt.
Before you rebook, use HashiCorp's free exam review to find the gap. On this exam the gap is usually state: import, moved resources, refresh behavior, and remote backends make up a fifth of the exam, and they are the topics you cannot learn by reading alone.
If you failed on state questions, the fix is a practice project, not more notes. Build something small, import an existing resource into it, rename a resource and move it in state, and switch the backend from local to remote. That covers most of what the retake will ask.

What renewal costs across the full cycle
The certification is valid for 2 years. To renew, you pass the current version of the exam again at full price, another $70. There is no continuing education route and no maintenance fee.
That sounds worse than a CEU program and is cheaper than almost all of them. A full renewal cycle here costs $70 every two years. CompTIA's CEU route involves an annual fee before you count the education itself.
The re-exam also does something a CEU form does not: it checks you against the current version of Terraform. The tool moves quickly, and a renewal that forces you to look at what changed has some actual value.
Cycle length: 2 years. Valid for 2 years; renew by passing the current version of the exam.
Typical preparation budget
Preparation for Terraform Associate can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $120, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
Our questions, explanations, and cheat sheets are free, and the explanation is never paywalled. That is the part of a paid practice set you are actually buying, so it is the part we do not charge for.
