What the exam tests

Exam domains and official weightings

The percentage is the exam weighting; the bar is how many verified questions we hold there, so a short bar is where our bank is thin.

  • General Security Concepts12%

  • Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations22%

  • Security Architecture18%
    55 verified
  • Security Operations28%

  • Security Program Management and Oversight20%

Where to focus: Security Operations is the heaviest domain at 28 percent. Give it proportionally more study time than the others.

What the exam actually asks you to do

Multiple choice, multiple response, and performance-based questions. The performance-based items drop you into a simulated console, network diagram, or configuration screen and score what you actually do.

Item formats

  • Multiple choice
  • Multiple response
  • Performance-based

The highlighted formats are the ones you cannot answer from memory alone. CompTIA, Security+ exam details

The part of Security+ you cannot memorize

Performance-based questions are where memorized dumps fail, because you cannot memorize your way through configuring or analyzing something. A dump can tell you which letter was marked correct. It cannot read the output on the screen in front of you and tell you what it means.

We built 21 of them for Security+, across 4 interaction types. They score with partial credit, and every one ends with a walkthrough of the reasoning rather than just an answer key.

Sequencing
Put incident response phases, forensic collection, or a remediation cycle in the order the work actually happens.
Log and output analysis
Read a real log excerpt, firewall rule set, or command output, then answer what it tells you.
Sorting
Drop controls, data states, or hardening tasks into the category each one belongs to.
Matching
Assign the right technology to each requirement, with a pool bigger than the number of slots so guessing does not pay.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions do I need to pass SY0-701?

CompTIA scores on a 100-900 scale with 750 required to pass, roughly 83% weighted, though performance-based questions carry more weight than multiple choice. Aim for consistent 85%+ on practice sets before booking.

Is Security+ good for beginners?

Security+ is an early-career security cert, but it assumes networking fundamentals. If ports, protocols, and basic network architecture are new to you, study Network+ material first even if you skip that exam.

Are Security+ braindumps safe to use?

No. Dumps are leaked exam content, using them violates CompTIA's candidate agreement, risks decertification and exam bans, and fails to prepare you for performance-based questions that dumps can't capture. Original objective-based practice is both safer and more effective.

How long should I study for Security+?

With an IT background, 4-8 weeks of consistent practice is typical. Focus study time by domain weight: Security Operations (28%) and Threats & Mitigations (22%) are half the exam.
